Detailing of jugs of this sort is rarely so fine, but here the artist has attempted life-like shading and veining on the flowers and leaves that adorn both sides of this piece. The whole of the bulbous body is lavish with copper luster, which covers the finely molded rim of grapevines, the fluted lip and the graceful handle. Superb condition. English, circa 1830. Approximately 5-1/2 inches tall and seven inches across at the widest diameter. (For another example of this ware, please see Trocadero 16180.) « Less

Here is a magnificent charger which balances bold authority with delicate detail. Around a central medallion of the Three Friends -- pine, prunus and bamboo -- in gilt-highlighted underglaze blue with red-touched border are panels of deep blue and lustrous gilding alternating with lively scenes of flowers and rocks visited by butterflies and phoenixes, symbolizing good fortune. Even the back is decorated with underglaze blue Buddhist horns and cloud-surrounded red and gilt cartouches. A red commendation mark, fuku (happiness), is in the center. Mint condition. Japanese, circa 1850. With a diameter of 17 inches, the charger was once used as a table; the faux-bambou painted stand is available optionally. « Less

This stately pair of steeds of an unusually large size until recently graced the tomb of a Chinese dignitary of the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. to 220 A.D.) Despite their great age they are in wonderful original condition, their slip-painted details mostly intact. Objects of this sort usually suffer from overhandling or overcleaning, but these were recently excavated and handled only with gloved hands. (With them comes a complimentary pair of museum gloves for that purpose.) Approximately 8-3/4 inches high by nine inches long by three inches deep. As with all our goods, these Han Dynasty pieces are guaranteed to be genuine and as described. Please note that, as usual with our policy, these pieces are guaranteed to be genuine and of the Han Dynasty. « Less

In mint condition, the glaze of this classic English silver luster teapot was the first commercial use of platinum, a metal discovered in about 1750. It was the answer for those who wanted a silver teapot but could not afford sterling; electroplating soon met that demand. This model successfully copies the typical silver example, with its swirling fluting and tender details. English, 1820 to 1840. Approximately 9-1/4 inches long by 5-3/4 inches tall by four inches wide. « Less

Stately and subtle, this tall vase exemplifies the virtues that have made Oribe stoneware favored by Japanese tea ceremonial connoisseurs and others for centuries. The soaring form and intentionally coarse surface make a monolithic background for the underglaze iron-oxide designs of weathered pinetrees on one side and the cavelike scene of "hanging persimmons" suspended from a slanted double border of latticework on the other. A green mantle of glaze engulfs the upper portion, a surprise of purplish-red bleeding out of the lower edges -- an effect I associate with wares of the late Nineteenth Century to the early Twentieth Century, the period of this piece. Condition is perfect. Approximately 11-1/4 inches tall by 5-1/2 inches at the largest diameter. « Less
