Antique 22 carat gold and coral hoop earrings. Made 80-100 years ago by a master craftsman in India. Measure approx 1 3/8 inches accross widest point. Weigh 14.1 grams. Outstanding classic design - large golden hoops adorned with gold enclosed coral beads. 3 beads to each earring. The beads are enclosed in very fine wire work, coiled around itself in circles, exposing the coral in the center. Double pattern where the coils meet and the coral shows in the space between them. Each bead is seperated from it''s neighbour by golden discs. On either side, holding all in place is a coil of tiny-sized twisted filigree wire. Earrings close with a small loop catch. The ends are narrow to facilitate ease of insertion in earholes. Very good condition. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. Antique 22 carat gold earrings looking like an amazing Art Deco sculpture, but in fact 100 year old ethnic / tribal earrings from Tamil Nadu, south India, possibly More »
Antique 22 carat gold earrings looking like an amazing Art Deco sculpture, but in fact 100 year old ethnic / tribal earrings from Tamil Nadu, south India, possibly representing a stylised cobra. Made circa 1900. Approx 1 5/8 inches long. Weigh 25grams. Known as thandatti, these earrings were worn in highly distended earlobes. All parts were handmade (and continue to be handmade by master craftsman). An excellent explanatory article on the internet by Ganguly Waltraud explains them in great detail as well as page 242 in her book on Indian earrings. The shapes and workmanship of the earrings are stunning and throw our concept of ''modernity'' into doubt. The large round balls (representing the snake''s eggs) are actually the terminals of handmade screws. Tiny hinges on the opposite side beneath the triangle. Good condition. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. Antique 22 carat gold, coral and gemstone earrings. Made in southern India, circa 1900 - 1925. Approximately 1 3/4 inches long, not including the loop, which adds about 1/2 More »
Antique 22 carat gold, coral and gemstone earrings. Made in southern India, circa 1900 - 1925. Approximately 1 3/4 inches long, not including the loop, which adds about 1/2 inch to the length. Antique earrings made of very high carat gold, handworked with coral and each set with a small gemstone, probably a spinel or low grade ruby (and tested to be a natural gem, not glass). A couple of gold globes followed by coral beads in bright orange support a cluster of tubular shaped coral ending in tiny round coral beads and finally an even tinier gold bead. Each part at sharp angles to the drop, forming a marvellous cluster with strong organic appearance. Coral is attached by gold wire, entirely hidden from sight, but shown by parting the coral, in the ''photos. The cluster is followed by a largely hidden gold ring from which similar coral groups stand at right angles with another pair dropping at their side. Inbetween is a red gemstone, which tests as a spinel or low grade ruby. A much larger coral bead with beautifully worked gold terminal forms the bottom of the earrings. The early tribal or ethnic sense of broad geometry and form, contrasting with the finest detail, is clearly shown in these earrings. They look fabulous and are a ''must have'' for any lover of good quality antique coral jewellery. No marks. Very good, original conditioin. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. Antique 18 carat gold earrings, with gold stamp work, granulation and filligree work. Made in Gujerat, northwest India, circa 1900 - 1915. Measure 2 inches long. Weigh 14.5 More »
Antique 18 carat gold earrings, with gold stamp work, granulation and filligree work. Made in Gujerat, northwest India, circa 1900 - 1915. Measure 2 inches long. Weigh 14.5 grams. Highly wearable antique gold earrings. Top part in the form of a sculpted flower, the gold hand-beaten and arching in naturalistic form. Each petal separated from it''s neighbour by fine filigree wire-work. The center consists of an intricate design - a series of stamped patterns in star and circular shape with encrusted minute granulation, from tiny to tinier granules and more delicate filigree work. The long necklike drop is a series of geometric shapes. Some using only the unadorned geometry of planes and angles to show off the gold to full effect; other parts decorated in granulation and filigree work. The earrings have gold loops which are comfortable to wear and easy to insert. Outstanding workmanship resulting in Classy elegance, suitable for day or night-time wear. No marks. Very good, original conditioin. Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. In her book on Indian earrings, pg84-85, Waltraud Ganguly explains that these earrings, called Phul vedhla, originate with the Saurashtra community and that they were given to a bride by her in-laws, and apparrently worn in the helix of the ear. Antique 22carat gold, gem and enamel earrings. Made circa 1880 - 1920 in India. 1 inch long. Weigh 5.6grams. Classic shape - elongated with elaborate, minute detail making up the whole. Golden globes of various sizes, exquisitely fine wire-work - some details too fine to see with the naked eye, and a series of 3-lobed discs, fanning out near the top. To enhance the gold further, a pair of red enamelled circles flank the largest globe. Old enamel work, called minakari, is incresingly difficult to find in good condition. Balancing the pear-shaped design of the top, is a pear-shaped gemstone pointing the other way. Surrounded by an engraved band of gold, it tests as a spinel or topaz (natural stone, not glass/synthetic). Superb craftmanship went into making this pair of earrings. Tiny detail seen in the little clover-shaped discs set alongside each other. Wonderfully elegant design. New backs make the earrings comfortable to wear for the modern woman who does not have the large distended holes in her ears that were worn by the original owner. Earrings have hallmarks on the backs One reads 22K and the other 16HS. Good condition. Back of one earring shows tiny sign of soldering, but this is not at all visible from the front. (highly magnified in ''photos). Good antique Mughal / Indian jewellery combines the wonders of ages gone by with amazing design and delicacy executed by outstanding craftsmen and is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain as it grows in appreciation throughout the world. Exquisite and very unusual pair of antique Victorian / Edwardian earrings. Made 19th century - 1860-80''s. Measure approx 1 1/4 inches long. Very elegant crescent shape. Each earring has two cabochon oval opals with very finely set small diamonds forming the background. The quality of the opals is lovely - showing a beautiful range of colours from blues to yellows with a marvellous inner glow and iridescence. The stones are set in silver as was most common for the Victorian period. The attachments were probably replaced with clips - very secure and done in 14k gold. Quality of workmanship is superb. The earrings curl up the earlobe when worn - most unusual and elegant. Very good condition. No damage/loss.
