Antique Tabriz, Persia, late nineteenth century Among the rug-producing centers of Persia Tabriz has the oldest continuous weaving tradition reaching back a thousand years or more. This exquisite antique piece preserves the design and technique of the great masterpieces produced in Tabriz under the Safavid dynasty. At the center a golden quatrefoil medallion replete with arabesque detail hovers amidst a lush array of curling, leafy vines on a burgundy ground. Cornerpieces of the same form and detail round out the field. A delicate palmette vinescroll border encloses the field, echoing the golden palette of the medallion and cornerpieces. Antique Kerman, Persia, late nineteenth century A lacelike design of flowering shrubs and palmettes based on the ‘Millefleurs’ designs of Kashmir embroidered shawls unfurls rhythmically across the rich red ground of this lavish antique Kerman. The design is so closely arranged that the red ground appears as little more than and accent for the contours pale creamy flowers. The main border adapts this design on a slightly smaller scale against a deep green ground. The palette of red, green, and ivory is inspired by the classical Indian or Moghul carpets of Agra, nicely complementing the North Indian or Kashmir origin of the design.
