Call us twisted - and you wouldnt be the first! - but an alcohol advertised as the choice of the athlete makes us giggle. (Bonal aperitif is an alcoholic drink made from wild gentiane found in the Chartreuse mountains). We love the depth of color, the texture and oomph of this poster - powerful and very, very Art Deco. Art Deco was a popular international art design movement from 1925 until the 1940s, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. The movement was a mixture of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism,Modernism, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. (wikipedia) Charles Lemmel produced a variety of posters for Bonal, each featuring smiling and virile athletes. Measuring 23.5 x 31 inches, this poster is linen lined and in very good condition ... The colors of this poster pop and we feel it will look wonderful framed. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. Many of the posters created for France''s war effort during WWI are so moving and special... they somehow evoke meaning and significance, while at the same time keeping the message front and center. Often called France''s ''secret weapon'' in the battle for public approval and funding of the war, they were credited with rallying the entire French populace behind the war effort with arguably the most artistically impressive and moving group of posters ever produced. This one is signed by Chavannez but I can find no information on the artist. Printed in 1918, it bears the #13370 and is in excellent condition. This poster is in excellent condition and is linen backed. It measures 44 x 30.5 inches and would look wonderful framed. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. . The posters in my gallery range from classic Art Nouveau and Art Deco masterpieces to strange and weird (some might say downright odd) posters like this one - and I have to admit that each one brings me pleasure of a different sort. The Art Nouveau and Deco babies are unquestionably beautiful and crafted with a skill that can not be compared, while posters like this are in a different category all together: this great big, honking French vintage poster is, I think, from just after World War One (I''m using the graphic style, the typographic style, the age of the paper and the quality of the paper as clues), and it is advertising American army surplus as a great value for French back-to- school. I think the concept is hysterical - imagine all these little French kids going to school with army surplus backpacks.... the visual makes me giggle because I think of French kids as way too prim and proper to be carrying that kind of schoolbag. Meanwhile the drill sargeant in the top left corner is literally ordering you to pick up your supplies THIS MINUTE!! Poster measures 47 x 31 inches, is in very good condition (B+), and is linen backed. PLEASE NOTE: ALL OF OUR POSTERS ARE ORIGINAL, NON REPRODUCTION, VINTAGE PIECES. A classic poster, measuring approx. 15.5 x 23 inches, by the Art Deco artist known as Simone Galpin. The poster extols the virtues of French honey - and cautions the buyer to look for the symbol and the stamp which guarantees that the product is genuine - and to make sure that there can be no mistake, the stamp is reproduced! We love the simplicity of the style and design of this poster - as always designs which are clean and clear are the ones which appeal to us the most. The colors are vibrant but not over the top, the size of the poster is manageable and we feel that it would look great in a kitchen, a child''s room - almost anywhere! Dated 1933, this large (64 x 46 inches, approx) poster was created by Edouard Courchinoux, who also had a printing company which produced the poster (convenient, that!). The idea was that although it was cold and snowy outside, inside you could enjoy the feeling of full-on summer because the heady sweetness of cherries, picked at their prime was captured by L''Ideal - the ideal way to preserve fruit. The colors pop, the poster is in pristine condition and we think this piece would look fab in a country home, a restaurant, a cannery (think of that!) or any place where food is served, eaten or even thought of... Please note that all of our posters, prints, pochoirs and ephemera are vintage, non-reproduction, period pieces. Please e-mail with any questions or requests for additional photos. Thank you. Biais, Maurice 47 x 21,5
I think it is always interesting to do research about the artists who produce the pieces that I sell - that way I, and the people who ultimately buy the pieces, can understand a little bit about who produced the artwork and the world in which the artist lived. This wonderful original lithograph, from roughly 1900, was created by Maurice Biais, the husband of Jane Avril, a Moulin Rouge performer often featured by Toulouse Lautrec. In a New York Times article written about a Biais exhibit in New York in Ê1901 it was said: "Maurice Biais follows in the footsteps of Cheret ... at times he suggests the London prodigy, Aubrey Beardsley, and again he will make .... one to recall some of the caricaturists for Munich "Jugend".

I just bought this poster in France, and I think part of the reason was that I was captivated by the colors and the way the image is laid out ... in mirroring the typical Persian/Middle Eastern (particularly Turkish) miniatures, the artist Peske, has created a masterpiece. Done in 1923 for a (comic) opera called Le Hulla, Peske uses subdued colors rather than the bright tones which were seen everywhere in Paris during the early Art Deco period. The full title of this opera is actually Le Hulla de Samarkand - referencing Sarmarkand, the (now Uzbekistani) city of the Silk Road. Wikipedia (my fav source!) tells us that ''Samarkand is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, prospering from its location on the trade route between China and the Mediterranean (Silk Road). At times Samarkand has been one of the greatest cities of Central Asia.'' As for the opera, it was often sung by Auguste Charles Paul Friant, a tenor of whom it was written '' ...it is with the greatest purity of vocalism that he sings his role... he interprets the music ... with the greatest ardor, never seeking the [easy] effect. Measuring 47 x 31 inches, in excellent A condition, mounted on linen, this poster is lovely. We will be happy to send additional photographs or information should you desire same.
