Roman Silver Denarius of Emperor Elagabalus - C.10352 Origin: Mediterranean Circa: 219 AD to 220 AD Collection: Numismatics Style: Roman Medium: Silver Elagabalus became More »
Roman Silver Denarius of Emperor Elagabalus - C.10352 Origin: Mediterranean Circa: 219 AD to 220 AD Collection: Numismatics Style: Roman Medium: Silver Elagabalus became emperor through the diligence and bravery of his grandmother, Julia Maesa. A powerful and immensely wealthy woman of the Severan family, she incited the Syrian legions stationed at Emesa to revolt against Macrinus in favor of her grandson. Although his Roman name was Bassianus, Elagabalus derives from his position as high priest of Elagabal, the Syrian god Ba’al. Elagabalus was one of the more scandalous rulers in Roman history. He was famed for hosting wild parties where overindulgence of all types was encouraged. The Eastern gods he brought to Rome were strange even to the permissive Roman society of the day. Perhaps his most offensive act was marrying a Vestal Virgin. To the Romans this act of Elagabalus not only desecrated their religion, but also their heritage. Julia Maesa attempted to regain control of the situation by having her other grandson, Severus Alexander, declared Caesar. When Elagabalus revoked this promotion, the Praetorian Guard, encouraged by Julia Maesa, rebelled against their emperor, hunted down, and executed Elagabalus. « Less

In an unusually fine state of preservation, this finely detailed sculpture is in the Sino-Tibetan tradition, revealing the Buddha seated in meditation (dhyanasana) on a double-lotus plinth with his hands in the dhyanamudra gesture and holding the image of a crenelated pagoda. In courtly attire, wholly covered in foliate scroll-work and having figures of the Buddha in the pose of teaching on the front as a pectoral and on the back two images of the Buddha with hands in the gesture of peace (ahhayamudra) and at the point of final entry into Nirvana (parinirvana.) Probably a Chinese statue manufactured in Yunnan or Sichuan Province, suggested by the style of the base, the symbolism depicted on the robes seem to indicate the piece was designed for import to the Lamaist Buddhist areas of Western Asia, Mongolia or possibly Tibet. It is highly unusual to find examples as intricately detailed and complete as this one, or ones that have not suffered over-cleaning and/or resurfacing. Chinese, late Sixteenth or early Seventeenth Century, the statue measures approximately 16-3/4 inches high by 11 inches wide by eight inches deep. « Less

This is a qaulity pairing of antique English pewter (likely Britannia metal) coffee pots made by James Dixon & Sons, circa 1850. The marks indicate between 1835-1879. These pots are near matching, but not quite. Both are aprox. 11 1/2" to the top of the finial. Both have wooden handles with beautiful serpentine spouts. The finials are pretty much the same. The difference is where the handle meets the pot. Both open/close well for the age. The wood shows paint loss. « Less
