The history of every country can clearly be seen through its posters. Nowhere is this truer than in the case of China - a vast country with a rich and diverse history of poster art. Perhaps this was because posters presented an effective and colorful means of communicating messages to a broad multi-lingual population, or perhaps it was because, as always, posters could convey in images what politicians could only hint at in speeches -- whatever the reasons, Chinese propaganda poster art is a niche market in and of itself. After the Founding of the People''s Republic of China in 1949, and throughout the 1950''s and 60''s - particularly during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution - Chinese poster artists were very active in terms of quantity and inventiveness. There are a huge variety of styles in the posters - some harsh, some naturalistic, some with the so- called ''sweet icing'' to give the people a more idealized look and to convey a more positive cheerful outlook... In short, there is something for everyone when it comes to Chinese propaganda posters. This poster shows a young rifle-toting boy (shouldn''t every boy be rifle toting??) going to the barber. Note the military tones as well as the sweet nature of the boy... poster is in excellent condition, measures 20 x 29 inches, and is linen lined. The artist of this poster is given as Hang Kwangchou, the printer was Les Editions populaires des Beaux Arts, and the title of the poster is: Support the Army, Love the People. This poster comes from the private collection of a noted author, collector and lecturer who has travelled widely in China and around the world. His poster collection is massive, and his knowledge quite legendary. He recently put together an exhibition of Chinese posters which was shown in national museums in Canada and France (this poster was part of that exhibition) and we are pleased and proud to have been asked to sell his posters. There is nothing more classically French than Ricard. Wikipedia (my source for all information) says: ''Pernod Ricard is a French company that produces alcoholic beverages. The company''s most famous products, Pernod Anise and Ricard Pastis, are both anise liqueurs, and often referred to as simply Pernod or Ricard. The company also produces several other types of pastis.Reborn from the Pernod Fils company as a producer of anise liqueur following the ban on absinthe, it is now a worldwide conglomerate. It owns the alcoholic beverage division of the former corporation Seagram, among many other holdings. In 2005, the company acquired British-based international competitor Allied Domecq plc. In 2008, Pernod Ricard announced the acquisition of Swedish-based V&S Group including Absolut Vodka.'' To the best of my knowledge the colors and branding of the company''s namesake product havent changed since this vintage poster was produced roughly 50 years ago. To me, the American interpretation of Deco has a bit of innocence in it - the innocence which is evidenced in this lovely 1923 poster (which makes it very early Deco) for the International Air Races at St. Louis. Aviation was in its early days, and still quite the draw: according to one historical website: In 1923 there was held on this field one of the greatest aeronautic events of the world. The total cost exceeded three hundred thousand dollars. On the day of the Pulitzer race we had an attendance of 140,000, parking over 24,000 automobiles. On the flying field we had ninety-two planes and the airstrip Shenandoah. One day during all this excitement, a tramp plane coming through the clouds, landed on the field. The pilot after pegging down his ship, introduced himself to several men sitting on a bench: ''My name is Lindbergh.'' Another website ), provides this account of the air race of 1923: From St. Louis Post-Dispatch September 30, 1923 FLYING CLUB OF ST. LOUIS TROPHY RACE, 1923 Seven contestants took part in the event, a 150-mile race for light planes with engines of 90 horsepower or less. The contestants got into the air at 11:00 a.m., and ''Casey'' Jones jumped into the lead in his ''Oriole.'' He led for the entire first lap of the 50-kilometer course, with Lawrence B. Sperry close behind in his ''messenger,'' followed by R.P. Hewitt''s Farman ''Sport,'' Walter E. Lees'' Hartzell FC1, Perry Hutton''s Laird ''Swallow.''{ St. Louisan William Robertson''s ''Special,'' and Tex La Grone''s Rogers ''Day/'' On the second lap,, Sperry, who was ''hedge-hopping'' at a jheight of 20 feet, took the lead from Jones, but he was overtaken by Lees at the start of the third and final lap. The rest of the field trailed behind the three leaders, with Tex La Grone three miles back. In the home stretch of the last lap, Sperry was only 200 yards behind Lees when he was forced down by ignition trouble. He made swift repairs and was able to complete the race. Lees crossed thefinish line at 12:04:50 p.m. with a total time of 62 minutes and 37.02 seconds, anaverage speed of 89.31 miles per hour, for which hewon the trophy and $500/ Perry Hutton was third for $200, at a speed of 85.28 miles per hour. Robertson was fourth at 83.95, La Grone fifth at 81.05, Hewitt sixth at 78.43, and Sperry last, his average dropping from 87.65 miles per hour for two laps to 71.95 for the entire race. It was a fine opoening event and was well appreciated by the enthusiastic crowd. From CITY OF LIGHT This poster is in very good condition, measures roughly 21 x 14 inches and is linen backed. By design, travel posters must express, in clear, concise and easily understandable graphic language, who the carrier is, where there destinations are, how they get there, and why you would want to use them. Whether we are talking about the great posters of the French (or Swiss, or Italian) railways from the early 1900''s, or the early Canadian Pacific Railway (or airline) posters, or mid-century airline travel posters - like this one for the Belgian air carrier Sabena - the posters had to grab your attention, and make you want to travel. This is an a wonderful poster (which now has an almost delicious retro feel about it) illustrating what was then considered the height (pardon the pun) of elegant travel - the Caravelle. A jet produced by the French aviation firm called Sud Aviation beginning in the mid 1950''s, and which was considered the ''ne plus ultra'' of jet travel. I don''t which I like better - the Audrey Hepburn''ish look of the woman or the je ne sais quoi of the jet ... ''SABENA was the national airline of Belgium from 1923 to 2001, with its base at Brussels National Airport. After its bankruptcy in 2001, the newly-formed SN Brussels Airlines took over part of SABENA''s assets in February 2002, which then became Brussels Airlines. The airline had its corporate headquarters in the Sabena House on the grounds of Brussels Airport in Zaventem.''(wikipedia) The poster measures 25 x 39.5 inches, is pristine and mounted on linen. The poster comes from the private collection of a noted collector, author and poster expert and has been in his possession since it were printed over 50 years ago. It will frame up beautifully and is magnificent. Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art. Please see our other posters, prints and ephemera. Thank you! A lovely and colorful period advertisement for a drink which was advertised as the best lemonade made from pure fruit and pure sugar (as opposed to what we wonder?) Evidently Les Etablisements Rivayrol also made wines, beers, oils and liqueurs, but in this advertisement it is La Mousseuse (the ''foamy'') that they are advertising. We love the man - very much in the style of Leon Dupin who was working around this time, but as it is an unsigned work, we guess it is more of an homage than a work of the master. This carton measures 9.5 x 12 and is printed on cardboard. It is in very good condition considering it''s age - a few scuffs indicate that it is close to 100 years old, but then again, I think that when you and I reach that age we will have a few signs of wear and tear as well. It LOOKS like Chaplin (kind of) but not quite, right? So, as usual, I did my research and found out that Billy West was a kind of Chaplin impersonator. According to IMDB, ''Billy West was a silent film comedian, the best-known and most successful imitator of Charles Chaplin''s ''Tramp'' character, until West developed his own comedic persona.Oliver Hardy was West''s foil in many of his silents.'' Evidently born in Russia in the early 1890''s, with the name Roy B. Weissburg, even after he gave up his Chaplin-esque character, he was incredibly prolific in the silent movie business (with literally hundred of movies in which he weither starred, produced or had some role in front of or behind the camera), but with the advent of sound, he seems to have lost his way... some put this change of luck downto his heavy Russian accent, others to his litigious nature, still others to serious financial problems which plagued him in later life. () This poster is from the 1916 movie called His Waiting Career, featuring Billy West and produced by the Unicorn Film Service. It is in immaculate condition with very, very minor restoration work on the top left corner - I have included photos for diligence but truly you have to be searching to see any work at all. The poster is big and beautiful. It is mounted on linen and is in very good condition (A) - intact and colorful. I have not been able to find any other example of this poster anywhere, in any condition. Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art. Please visit our other posters, prints and ephemera. Thank you! We are happy to ship worldwide - please note that the price listed for international shipping is for standard surface mail delivery - international courrier costs for FedEx, DHL, UPS or other companies will be quoted at the time of purchase, based on the buyer''s location.
