The fluid movements of the artistic color and style of the posters from the Art Nouveau's style to the World War I was not so idealistic and there was the rise of: modern technology which gave rise to the art movements of Dada and Surrealism in the years following World War I. In the graphic arts, Art Nouveau's organic inspiration was replaced by Art Deco's aesthetic. Power and speed became primary themes, with shapes simplified and streamlined, and curved letter forms were replaced by sleek, angular ones, this was more of the Art Deco style which is reflected in this poster after Domerque, a known French Poster Artist. « Less

Decorative Late 19th Century French Poster by Cheret, H:52.5" W:37.5". Historically the earliest origins of the poster are traced back to the 16th century when printed panels of paper began to replace the town crier as a means of conveying community news and information. This visual method of communication were of such subject matters as: of political decrees, church events, obituaries, town meetings and other news that impacted community members. With the Invention of Lithography around 1798, by Alois Senefelder of Austria this laid a sturdy foundation for the future of posters. Despite Senefelder's impressive body of work in the art of poster design and production, Jules Cheret is considered the father of the poster industry. By the 1860s, Cheret had pioneered rapid color lithography and the ability for mass production. Cheret also helped transform posters from a simple means of news conveyance into an aesthetic art form. There was a prominent poster art movement during the 1890s, with the use of posters as a form of aesthetic advertising which spread through Europe and helped sell a variety of products and services. It was during 1895 through 1900, again Cheret was at the forefront of the poster art movement, where he created the successful and historical "Masters of the Poster" lithographic series. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who designed dramatic posters of Parisian personalities, was also a popular artist of this era, along with Mucha and others. It was then that the movement was introduced into the United States by poster artist Will Bradley. In our own American History Posters played crucial role after the First World War began in 1914, posters became an influential means of displaying specific war and revolution information that governments wanted to convey. Poster design constantly evolved throughout the 20th century and featured assorted styles of the social history of the contemporaty times, it illustrates the importance of this evolution and its communication plus the decorative color and narrative of Posters. FROM WIKIPEDIA: Congo Crossing is a 1956 adventure film directed by Joseph Pevney and starring Virginia Mayo and George Nader. Most of the exterior sequences were shot in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. Plot synopsis: Congotanga, West Africa, has no extradition laws; the government is controlled by foreign gangsters, headed by Carl Rittner (Tonio Selwart). The latest plane from Europe carries Louise Whitman (Virginia Mayo), (fleeing a French murder charge), and Mannering (Raymond Bailey), who pays resident hit man O''Connell (Michael Pate) to kill her. Through a chain of circumstances Louise, O''Connell, and heroic surveyor David Carr (George Nader) end up alone in the jungle on Carr''s mission to determine the true border of Congotanga... in which Rittner is keenly interested. Although vintage movie posters are not usually my thing, this one was just so over the top that I couldn''t resist... I love Peter Lorre looking evil over in the top left corner. The poster measures 27 x 41.5 inches and is mounted on linen - it is in very good condition. All of our posters, prints and pochoirs are authentic, vintage items. Please see ourour other items for sale - check back often we add things almost every day! The history of every country can clearly be seen through its posters. Nowhere is this truer than in the case of China - a vast country with a rich and diverse history of poster art. Perhaps this was because posters presented an effective and colorful means of communicating messages to a broad multi-lingual population, or perhaps it was because, as always, posters could convey in images what politicians could only hint at in speeches -- whatever the reasons, Chinese propaganda poster art is a niche market in and of itself. After the Founding of the People''s Republic of China in 1949, and throughout the 1950''s and 60''s - particularly during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution - Chinese poster artists were very active in terms of quantity and inventiveness. There are a huge variety of styles in the posters - some harsh, some naturalistic, some with the so- called ''sweet icing'' to give the people a more idealized look and to convey a more positive cheerful outlook... In short, there is something for everyone when it comes to Chinese propaganda posters. Many of the posters were calendars and product shots, occasionally (like here) incorporating a celebrity spokesperson. I like the Art Deco border which surrounds this poster and which is unusual in Chinese posters. Poster measures 14 x 28.5 inches, and is linen backed. Overall very good condition with small restoration evident in margins - none affecting image. This poster comes from the private collection of a noted author, collector and lecturer who has travelled widely in China and around the world. His poster collection is massive, and his knowledge quite legendary. He recently put together an exhibition of Chinese posters which was shown in national museums in Canada and France (this poster was part of that exhibition) and we are pleased and proud to have been asked to sell his posters. We are happy to ship worldwide - Note that our shipping rates for international customers is for standard surface shipping - expedited shipping is available at an additional cost (which will be calculated at the time of purchase based on buyers location and charged in addition to surface rates. In short, there is something for everyone when it comes to Chinese propaganda posters. Many of the posters were calendars and product shots, occasionally (like here) incorporating a celebrity spokesperson. The woman featured was, I am told, the Chinese version of Amelia Earhardt (interesting that there was one in every country in the world, but I digress). She is shown in her spotless white gloves, in front of a plane (and if you look very closely you can see the red army guard working on the plane in the background), and the calendar is on the bottom (there is some image loss in the calendar section of the poster but it is nominal and doesnt at all detract from the integrity of the poster overall). The cigarettes featured are appropriately named World Hero and Pyramid - allusions to the greatness of the woman featured in the poster and the wonderful distances she had covered. I also like the Art Deco border which surrounds this poster and which is unusual in Chinese posters. Poster measures 20 x 30, was produced by in Sheng, for the Fu Xing Tobacco Co. in Macao in 1934 and is linen backed. Overall very good condition.
