Nezha statue, late 17th to early 18th century, handcarved wood. Depicted with three heads, six arms, two fire wheels in his upper hands, and “cosmic ring” held at his chest, Nezha stands with one foot on the tiger and the other on a serpent. Nezha is a Taoist protection deity, the trickster, originally of Chinese Buddhist mythology. Believed to deliver mortals from calamity, he was put on earth by the Jade emperor to subdue a plague of demons.Asian folklore contains many stories of Nezha as one of the Gods. Good and bad come from Nezha, but good is always the outcome.
