This item has been SOLD. This remarkably detailed bronze of Lt.Col. John C. Fremont depictied as "The Pathfinder" is number 1 of an edition of 20, signed G. Wentworth and dated 1977. Wentworth's work is known for its historic accuracy and attention to the smallest detail. He was a passionate student of the westward expansion and the American frontier and that study is seen in his work. The viewer is immediately aware of not only this detail and historic accuracy but Wentworths ability to create an almost living tension in his work. Note the fixed attention of the subject as well as his horse. They both appear to have seen something which not only has their complete focus but they also appear about to move in that direction. Fremont leans slightly forward in his saddle and the horse has just started to raise a front and hind hoof, almost motion. A remarkable work that represents an excellent addition to any art collection. In excellent condition, slight scratches to the title plate. Size, H: 17.5", length 13". Size of base is 12" by 6.75". A very fine quality Sevres bisque statue of a Doughboy walking with a German pickelhaube in his left hand and his Springfield rifle in his right. The symbol of victory. Remarkable attention to detail in both the uniform and equipment as well as in the youthful features of the soldier. The base is dated 1918 in the front and is signed Ducuinc. In addition there are three cartouche stamped into the side of the base, a rectangular stamp with SEVRES, a square stamp with LC and a partially obscured stamp with 1918 over DN and surrounded with what appears to be Delve Sevres. A very well executed sculpture. H:10.75", the oval base is 3.25"wide. In excellent condition, only slightly soiled.   « Less

With the Great War raging in Europe the United States remained uncertain about our involvement. In 1915 the National Security League commissioned a sculpture that recalled the highly romanticized success of the Rough Riders during the Cuba Campaign. This clean cut, assured soldier seems to be intended to put the country at ease during such troubled times. An attractive work of art with interesting historic significance. A sealed chalk sculpture. A wounded Infantryman in WW1 German uniform with two Iron Cross decorations prominently displayed. The brass plaque on the marble base, dated 1915, reads Fur Gott u. Vaterland, (For God and Fatherland). The nobility of features and the attention to uniform and equipmqnt detail suggests a talented artist. A bronze finish, metal statue on a dark marble base. Aside from the scratches on the brass plate, the condition is very good with no apparent cracks or breaks. H:figure only 8", 11" on base, base width 4".   « Less

England or Low Countries 19th century Carved female bust, displaying traditional costume (lace headdress and shirred collar), most likely representing a woman from Sweden, Norway or Denmark. Before the era of photography, pieces like this would have been carved as an homage to grandparents, etc. There is a signature carved onto the flat surface of her left shoulder (see detail shot), but it seems to be indistinguishable.   « Less
