Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, circa 1900 - Many Khotans have designs with one or more medallions; this one has rows of small medallions arranged as an allover design, like Turkoman rugs from further west. Smaller secondary forms between the medallions also recall Turkoman rugs, but the intervening pale blue cloud forms are an extraordinary addition to such a design. These betray the debt of Khotan weavers to Chinese tradition, as does the spectacular cloud border that envelopes the field. Still, what is most impressive is the unusually large size of the carpet, a scale rarely encountered in attained Khotan rugs.

Antique Hereke, Turkey, 1880's - Every floral rug is a garden of sorts, teeming with plants and fruits. But this one is a lush, tropical forest. Lotus palmettes and rosettes fill the spaces between the dominant element - circular arrays of curving sickle leaves adapted from the classical "Herati" design. The red and golden hues of the field contrast nicely against the main blue-ground border with its magnificent arabesque vine scroll. The finely proportioned detail of this border also sets off the large-scale forms of the field in a savvy opposition that helps to vary the overall density of the design.

Antique Tabriz, Persia, circa 1900 Four elaborate arabesque palmettes in pale aubergine combine within a tan diamond-shaped contour to comprise the central medallion on this superior antique Tabriz. Scalloped cornerpieces with similar detail correspond to the central medallion, while delicate sprays of flowering vines and branches swirl across the field in between. Serial palmette cartouches comprise the border, reversing the subtle color contrasts of the field. While the design is almost dazzlingly complex, it is mollified by the tone-on-tone coloration to achieve a more neutral decorative effect.

Savonnerie, France, late nineteenth century A monumental neo-classical cartouche border in crimson with golden acanthus scrolls and corner palmettes fames the salmon field on this lavish antique French Savonnerie. The field is further embellished by a diamond lattice of strapwork bands with rosette fillers and a grand central medallion with a scalloped edging. The design is simultaneously rich and monumental, and yet clear and open, a remarkable balance difficult to achieve. The effect of the crimson is nicely contained by the dominant gold and salmon tones.
