Circa 1885. Exceptional Aesthetic Movement picture frame. This is the most unusual example of a 19th century Victorian, Asian influenced (Japanesque) accessory I have come across. Made of bronze and other metal, decorated with growing bamboo and a bird on a branch fashioned in mother of pearl and either bone or ivory. The detail on the metal is exceptional with a "woven" back-round and three dimensional chrysanthemums, daisies and other flowers. The back is covered in what appears to be black leather, and the opening is backed in wood. The lighter wood support is newly made and very sturdy. The only condition issues are a discoloration on the tip of a leaf (below the bird) which could be an old repair, and a small hair line in the bronze by the birds beak, which appears to be superficial. The patina is worn on some of the raised areas of metal but is in over-all good condition. This rare frame would be a wonderful addition to any Aesthetic Movement collection. 7 1/4" wide x 10" tall. The oval photo opening is 5 3/4"high x 3 7/8" wide.   « Less

Circa 1890. Hand carved late Victorian or early Arts and Crafts dark oak picture frame. All original and in excellent original condition, this fine easel type frame features a flowing ribbon carved around the entire frame, finished at the top and bottom center with a decorative carved loop. This frame could be "Black Forest" but I am not sure of its origins. Original glass, wood back and stand. 11 1/4" tall x 7 5/8" wide, the picture opening is 6 3/4" high x 4 1/4" wide.   « Less

It is hard to describe the quality and condition of this wonderful frame, from the hi-relief sculptural quality of the flowers (iris), and bamboo exterior edge to the fine texture of the woven bamboo back round. All original, very heavy with great original patina. Antique picture frame inlaid solid mahogany. The outside measurements of the frame are 25 and three quarters by 21 and one quarter inches. The inside area where you would either put your piece of art work or a mirror measures 24 and one quarter inches by 19 and three quarters inches. The frame is one half inches thick. This frame is simple but elegant. It is inlaid with boxwood and has inserts in all for corners which made it strong. The glass is in good condition with no chips or cracks. We do not know the exact age or date. It weighs 1 pound and is 18 inches tall by 15 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick.
