Of those proofs, just a few dozen have been designated as Cameo by either NGC or PCGS. And of those Cameos, NGC and PCGS have combined to certify5 66's and five 67's, with none finer (7/08). While 1884 proof half dollars were preserved at a high rate, it is clear that this coin stands strong among the elite not only for the date and series, but for the type. At 735 pieces it is surprising that the mintage of the proof 1898 half dollar is lower than for eample the proof 1859 half struck two generations earlier. Most likely numismatists from the turn of the century paid little attention to contemporary coinage and concentrated on colonials and early U.S. series. Country of Origin:USA Condition:Ecellent Year:19121912 50C PR67 Cameo NGC. In 1912 the mintage of Proof half dollars eceeded that of the previous year by just 18 coins with eactly 700 eamples minted. The majority of those were mishandled and there seems to be little doubt that some of the coins were actually spent. All of these factors influence the surviving population and few high quality coins eist today. Indeed NGC and PCGS combined have certified a mere five pieces at this level and PCGS has seen one eample finer (6/05). This amazing and near brilliant Proof displays a few wisps of peripheral dappled light tan color. The surfaces are nearly perfect and the design elements are sharp. The only softness is to be found in the upper right (facing) corner of the shield. This super Gem is the finest possible coin the connoisseur could possibly hope for. It is a coin not only for the advanced date collector or the collector of coins by design type but it is also for the numismatist who simply enjoys objects of etreme beauty.   « Less
