Call us twisted - and you wouldnt be the first! - but any alcohol which is advertised as one of the choices of athletes makes us giggle. (Lillet aperitif is, according to Wikipedia: a brand of French aperitif wine. It is a blend of 85% wine and citrus liqueurs made from a variety of oranges. Lillet is matured in oak casks and available in red and white versions. While it has been produced since the late 1800s, the current formulation dates from 1987 (1990 for Red Lillet) and is relatively less bitter and sugary, and more fruit flavoured, than the historical one. We love the depth of color, the texture and oomph of this poster - powerful and very, very Art Deco.Andre Galland produced a variety of posters for Lillet, each featuring smiling and virile athletes. Measuring 23.5 x 31 inches, this poster is in excellent condition - the colors of this poster pop and we feel it will look wonderful framed.

Gamy (Marguerite Campion)
17 x 31,5
Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed 'M. Montaut', she also used the name 'Gamy', an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. One of the elements of this piece we which love is the inclusion of horsebacked cavalry riders next to the automobiles which would soon replace them - the date of the piece, 1914, makes clear that change, and war, was just around the corner.

Goldenbaise
24,5 x 39
It would be hard to find a more classically Deco image than this one which was purchased recently in Europe. Advertising a department store where things are well made but not expensive, this happy couple seems to have done well on their shopping expedition, if judging only from the number of packages hanging off their arms and their happy expressions. Artist signed Goldenbaise, and dated 1935, printed by Marci Affiches, we have had this poster lined to protect its investment value and physical integrity. We think it is an impressive and interesting tribute to Deco artistry and would make a great addition to any collection. Overall excellent (A) condition - Paper, linen backing. Poster measures 23.5 x 15 inches.

Jacqueline, J.
15,5 x 23,5
One of the things we love best about posters of the 20's and 30's is their simplicity - the message is delivered in a straightforward but almost always charming manner (no subliminal advertising here!). This small poster for the company Stemm is no exception: two deliciously rosy-cheeks children, wearing comfortable clothes and lovely socks... the message is: buy these and your children can look like this too. Simple, but effective. Rendered in wonderful colors which are toned down but stylisticly consistent with the Art Deco period. Produced in France probably during the Art Deco period, this poster is professionally linen backed and measures 15.5 x 23.5 inches. It is signed by the well known and widely respected French artist J. Jacqueine.

Kentridge, William
26,5 x 38
This poster was given as gift to the former Dutch consul in Montreal when he was posted in South Africa as a gift by the South African government to him at the end of his posting in that country. It is hand signed and numbered by the artist. The poster measures 26.5 x 38 inches and has been professionally mounted on linen to protect its physical integrity. William Kentridge is considered by many to be the greatest living South African artists of this - or any other - time. He is multi-disciplinary: his works encompass print-making (as evidenced in this work), as well as video installations, paintings, full scale opera productions (he just - for the 2010 season - produced an original interpretation of GogolÕs the Nose for New YorkÕs Metropolitan Opera)

Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the century. As a struggling and relatively unknown artist of Czech origin living in Paris, Mucha achieved immediate fame when, in December 1894, he accepted a commission to create a poster for one of the greatest actresses of this time, Sarah Bernhardt. Though the printer was apprehensive about submitting Mucha«s final design because of its new unconventional style, Bernhardt loved it and so did the public. «Le style Mucha«, as Art Nouveau was known in its earliest days, was born. The success of that first poster brought a 6 years contract between Bernhardt and Mucha and in the following years his work for her and others included costumes and stage decorations, designs for magazines and book covers, jewellery and furniture and numerous posters. Mucha was much sought after by both private and public clients, and Lefevre Utile used him for more than one type of their biscuits. However, this particular Mucha work is considered quite rare: showing three Italian cities and landmarks in each (Naples=Vesuvius, Venice=canals, Rome=Colosseum), it is highly stylized (as are all Mucha's works), highly colorized (ditto), and signed in each panel. Mucha felt that art existed only to communicate a spiritual message, and nothing more' - one can see in this commercial work that the great master managed to bring a certain spirituality to the most mundane biscuits, and to do it with grace, style and elan, as only he could do.
