Villa Valencia finish with warm brown and rose undertones. European-inspired design Turned pedestal legs Heavily distressed finish Footprint 42L x 32H x 19W Knee hole 20 x 20 Cabinets 8W x 17L Writing/keyboard extension 20W x 17L This piece can be dated circa 1930’s because beginning in the late 1920s, Hekman used a modified shield shape in red, surrounding a large white “H” inside (shown here). In the 1940s the company switched to a large “H” containing the name “HEKMAN,” surrounded by a laurel wreath. The source, with permission of the author, is Grand Rapids Furniture: The Story of America’s Furniture City by Christian G. Carron, published by the Grand Rapids Public Museum. 1998. This unique writing desk has seen its own history. The turned pedestal legs show evidence of scorching from indirect heat or flame. The cabinet hinges were restored but the original pulls and flip top hinges were melted. They were replace with period brass and porcelain pulls and invisible hinges.   « Less

The linear band presents three drawers hidden as well as a gold-coloured melted bronze decoration finely chiselled, decorated with bronze heads in four angles. Feet in mahogany engraved by a sinuous line ending by a motive for paws leonine, decorated with rich gold-coloured bronze applications in the motive for sheets of acanthus. Magnificent North German Biedermeier Secretary from the first quarter of the 19th century. Amazing book-matched Birchwood on pine. The falling bureau door covers various compartments and drawers and a slide-out writing surface covered in amazing brown leather, all flanked by four columns with 24 ct gold plate capitals. Beautiful line inlays on the front and drawers. The seven drawer fitted interior consists of one long drawer above six short drawers and ebonized trims surrounding a door. The interior door is flanked by half columns with gold plated capitals. This Secretary retains its beautiful, rich, original color & patina and has a fresh french polish.
