Heian period (794 CE-1185 CE) Japanese bronze mirror with a raised border. It features a pair of cranes with the male feeding the female crane. The design signifies the eternal marital unity (the cranes mate for life) and a symbol of the heaven, also longevity and good luck. Green patina is present on the surface. Scattered pine needle are present and in addition to the crane symbolize long life and good luck (kissho). A central minogame (boss) is in shape of a turtle that also symbolizes the longevity and the earth. Very rare Japanese antique artifact. Diameter: 4.5" (11.5 cm.). Late Edo period Japanese bronze mokko gata (4 lobes) tsuba with high relief gold inlay decorations. The obverse side features a pagoda with a pine tree on background. A river stream with a representation of a water mill wheel and a bridge are skillfully represented. It has a kogai hitsu ana, but no kozuka hitsu ana. The small size of nakago ana denotes that this tsuba was made for a short sword. The surface of tsuba is nanako (fish roe). Provenance: Dr. Mircea Veleanu's collection, the author of the collectors' textbook: "Antique swords and daggers". Edo period bronze mokko gata (4 lobes) tsuba decorated in high relief with hon zogan (inlay of precious metals in high relief). The obverse side features a grasshopper with silver and gold inlays, a butterfly with shakudo wings and gold body and antenna and a snail with silver and gold inlays. The reverse side features a grasshopper with silver and gold inlays and a spider with silver inlay. The kogai hitsu ana (the opening for kogai) and kozuka hitsu ana( opening for kazuka) were obturated with shakudo filler. Tsuba (Japanese swords hand guard) are one of the most important collecting item for the Japanese edged weapons collectors.
