Boutet de Monvel 9 x 12
The Maitre de l'affiche posters were a collection sent to poster afficionados and subscribers just before the turn of the century (roughly 1896-1900).THIS IS AN ORIGINAL POSTER AND NOT A REPRODUCTION. IT IS PART OF THE COLLECTION OF THE MAITRE DE L'AFFICHE AND IS EMBOSSED WITH THE SEAL OF THE MAITRE.Les Maitres de l'Affiche, Affiches Illustrees and Das Moderne Plakat" were produced for collectors at the turn of the century and have been sought after by collectors for over 100 years. Many of the posters in the series cannot be found today in any other format. They have not survived. Others are extremely rare and have sold for staggering amounts (for example see PL.122, PL.197, and PL.95). Individual plates can range in price from around $100 to over $10,000 USD. With the advent of more interest in posters, prices have been increasing steadily. Over the last 10 years, many plates have doubled or tripled in value. According to innewyork.com, ÒVintage Posters appear to be immune to trends and make a particularly sound investment; their value increases about 10% a year...Why? Authentic vintage posters, which are defined as posters that were made by a company for a specific item at a specific time, are becoming increasingly scarce...ÓThis charming advertisement for toothpaste is a great example of French poster art and can be displayed with pride in any room of your home or business. This advertising poster measures 9 x 12, is in excellent condition and is sold framed.

Cappiello, Leonetto
48 x 64
Cappiello is considered to be one of the greatest posterists of his age. Cappiello's approach was always image association - the idea that you don't really remember the image of the product itself, but the image of something is associated with the product ... Cappiello was the first who thoroughly understood this, and he applied it with considerable diligence in about a thousand posters.'(Rennert) Born and raised in Livorno, Italy, . Encouraged by his brother, who was living in Paris at the time, Cappiello endeavored to sell his caricatures to magazines that would pay and support his art. He was so ambitious that he even approached Giacomo Puccini, the composer to ask if he could sketch him. He was successful and managed to submit the images to Le Rire magazine. Soon after, Cappiello became a sought after cartoonist and caricaturist. His style, simple lines with strong colors and an equally strong product message was evident in some of the first commissions he received: an 1899 album of pochoirs depicting famous actresses of the age shows clearly that even as a young man Cappiello had already developed a style which he would use, with incredible results, throughout his creative life. Cappiello's portraits and posters were playful and unique, a quality that bred his success. Because of the simplicity of his graphics, Cappiello was able to produce nearly 1000 posters in his time and was an inspiration to many lithographers to follow.

Cassandre, Adolphe Mouron
9 x 12 (Matted to 16,25 x 20)
A.M. Cassandre was a painter, commercial poster artist, typeface designer, and stage designer. Born in 1901 in Charkov, Ukraine, Cassandre went to Paris in 1915, studying painting at the ƒcole des Beaux-Arts and the AcadŽmie Julian. For a while he worked as a student at the Hachard & Co. press. In the 1920s A.M. Cassandre belonged to avant-garde circles and had many well-known friends in artistic, musical and social circles. A.M. Cassandre earned a reputation as the designer of bold, stringently geometric posters in the Art dŽco style. A.M. Cassandre received his first commission for a large poster from the Paris furniture store Au Bžcheron in 1923. He designed hundreds of posters - many of them, like this one, classics in the language of Art Deco design and decor. A.M. Cassandre designed posters in a stringently Constructive formal language that pays obvious tribute to the power of the machine and shows influences of Cubism and other Art Deco artists who were working in Paris at the time. Cassandre also developed typefaces and taught at the ƒcole des Arts DŽcoratifs. He had his own art school until 1935. Between 1936 and 1939 A.M.Cassandre lived in in New York, where he freelanced as a commercial artist. In 1939 A.M. Cassandre returned to Paris, where he continued to work as a graphic designer, designed stage sets, and again turned to painting. In 1963 A.M. Cassandre designed the Yves Saint Laurent monogram. Cassandre's private life was hectic and often unhappy - often married, he had unsuccessfully attempted suicide before his final, successful attempt in 1968. This classic poster, measuring approx. 9 x 12 inches, illustrates the style for which Cassandre is best known - clean, precise and never using more detail than is necessary. Produced for the Galeries Lafayettes in Paris, it integrates Cassandre's style with photo montage to inimitable result.

The Parisiana was a play house or theatre, much like the Folie Bergeres. We have other posters produced by Damare for this hall, yet no biographical data for DamarŽ is available. He (or she) worked for the Folies BergÂres, the Olympia and other top music halls for years, always coming up with humorous, attention-getting designs of this sort. With no particular information on this play available (lost in smoke as it were), we have to imagine that La Belle Otero was thinking of becoming a nun ... or something... Poster is in excellent condition, linen-backed and measures 35 x 49.5 inches.

Cheret, Jules
33,5 x 90
THIS IS AN ORIGINAL POSTER AND NOT A REPRODUCTION. By the 1890s the streets of every great metropolis were enlivened by large colourful posters . The poster had not only caught the fancy of the broad public, but its best examples were already being regarded as works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reprinted in a manageable form. In the last five years of the century, the Imprimerie Chaix was to play great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient period of 'La Belle Epoque.'Ê

Cheret, Jules
11,5 x 15,75 (Framed to 12 x 17)
This charming advertisement by the master of modern lithography, Jules Cheret, was produced in 1888 for the benefit of Emergency Night Shelters; announcing an exbŽhibition of French Art from the period of Louis XIV and Louis XV at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. It is a great example of French poster art and can be displayed with pride in any room of your home or business. This advertising poster measures 12 x 17, is in very good condition (with a minor tear roughly two and half inches about the seal of the Maitres on the far right hand side of the page - see close up photo - on the margin of the page. It is barely apparent and mentioned only for the sake of honesty.) The print is sold framed.

Clerice, Francois & Victor
47 x 63
It has often been said that posterists looked at the human condition, or human situations, and took the best of them à this poster is certainly a tribute to that: the Ã’girlfriendÓ (gosse de riche is French slang for Ã’spoiled bratÓ) flapper-girl, is trying to hide on the sofa under a pile of pillows, while her gentleman friend attempts to head off his fiancŽ (and her parents!) at the front doorÉ One doesnÕt need a lot of imagination to see why this theater piece was the toast of paris in the early 1920ÕsÉ The detail in fashion and caricature is charming, and even with a limited palette, the Clerice brothers make it quite clear where their sympathies lie. Charles ClŽrice was born in Buenos Aires into a family of Normandy origins. The family moved to France after the death of father ClŽrice in 1881. Charles found employment as an illustrator and lithographer. The signature of ClŽrice appeared regularly in the early issues of La Semaine de Suzette in the 1910s, with comics featuring Arabs and Persians in the fairytale atmosphere of '1001 Nights'. Charles was sometimes helped by his brother Justin in the production of posters. These posters are mostly signed 'ClŽrice FrÂres'(http://lambiek.net) .This poster measures 47 x 63 and is mounted on period linen. It is a magnificent and amusing image and would make a fabulous statement in any room, loft or lobby

Ferrand, Louis
15,5 x 20,5
In the past 100 years or so, the French government has put out some of the most interesting and artistic posters for the Loterie Nationale. While I wouldn't say that they are 'high art', they are not designed to be - they are supposed to appeal to what the French call Mr. & Madame Tout le Monde, what you and I would call Mr. & Mrs. Smith - uncomplicated folks who buy a lottery ticket because they don't expect to win, but they hope that maybe ... The posters are simple and sweet, like this lovely (and very early) one done by Louis Ferrand. Printed by Les Estampes de la Loterie Nationale and numbered 1035, it is entitled Le Guichet de la Loterie Nationale (roughly translates as the ticket booth of the lottery). I can find no particular information on this artist but would date this piece as having been produced within the first 20 years of 1900.
