Antique Japanese wooden boat with A-frame detachable cover. Based on the wood wear and aging, it appears that this boat model probably dates to Edo period, 16th.-18th. century. The boat was constructed without nails and the bindings was accomplished with special jute strings and intricate knots. The wood appears to be Hinoki (Japanese cypress), a wood very resistant to rot and light in weight. Length: 16.5" (42 cm.). Cover length: 9" (23 cm.). Height without cover: 5" (13 cm.). The scabbard has an iron U-bar encircling high relief chiseled silver plaque featuring 2 serpent-dragons and 3 cabochon inlaid semi-precious stones in between them. Silver hilt with silver wire grip. Trefoil pommel with a carnelian decoration. Single edge blade showing typical primitive watering. The reverse side of the scabbard depicts the 8 auspicious Buddhist emblems chiseled in high relief.
