Circa 1770 Chippendale Secretarial Desk.
This has been in our family since at least 1930. This was given to my Grandmother by her Aunt that year. Please see photo of the tag that has been there since then. It has never been removed, and I remember this very tag as a child growing up in the 1960's.
The left pull-out brace that supports the desktop when open, and flat has a broken bond where the brass connects with the wood. This must have been done when it was put into storage in 2007, as it was not noticed until May of 2012 when it was taken out of storage.
Additional photos will be taken for anyone who wishes to see them. I will answer questions as best that I am able to, but please note that I am not overly knowledgeable about this item prior to the 1960's/1970's. It was always in our home until my mother passed away in 1997. I have had it in my home until July, 2007 when it was put into storage. It remained there until May of 2012.
I dusted it with a soft rag before the photos were taken on May 24, 2012. No oil, or furniture polish of any kind has been used on it in 14 years. It was professionally cleaned by an antique furniture dealer in 1998. It has not been exposed to any cleaners, polishes, or anything else of that nature to my knowledge since 1998. I only used a dry, soft cloth to dust it.It was kept in a dry, cool, and out of the sunlight environment while it has been in my possession.
Additional photographs gladly taken upon request. I will answer questions honestly to the best of my ability, however I am only able to answer questions that date back to my exposure to the desk going back to the 1960's, as before that much of the information has passed on with the ensuing deaths of the people closest to it.
Thank you for viewing this beautiful item. $8,500.00 « Less

Fine American Chippendale Mahogany Ball and Claw Slant Lid Desk
Salem or Boston Massachusetts, c. 1770-90
Item # 120411EIU26
This listing is for a Fine Chippendale Period Ball and Claw Slant Lid Desk, Salem or Boston Area, Massachusetts circa 1770-90. It features wonderful dense grain solid board mahogany lid, rabbeting on both sides to complete the horizontal frame, lifting smoothly over replaced brass hinges and falling on two sliding mahogany lopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby holes. The drawers are each inscribed for where each belongs in the scheme of the desk, in pencil 1-9, and each is hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms rabbeting into the drawer frame. The center drawer is a wonderful sunk 18-lobed shell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it in a form common in Massachusetts case pieces, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany.
The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side, dovetailed into the parallel-grained pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards, behind which a pine bar perpendicular to the boards to support the top to the bottom, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking.
Each drawer is graduated, each below larger proportionally to the one above, sliding in and out of the beaded frame. The white pine frame side rails are beaded on their top inner surfaces, dovetailed at the front and backs, the bottom boards running perpendicular to the case, chamfered along the edges and rabbeting into the frame. Each drawer has replaced batwing hardware with drilled holes close to the original holes, along with replaced locking hardware. There are no dust boards between drawers. Between each drawer, the beaded crossbars join the case with exposed dovetails on either side, much in the manner of Newport furniture.
The case rests over four bird's-talon claws and sharp-cornered knee'd feet, executed in a form commonly regionalized to Eastern Massachusetts, and flanked on each corner with scalloped returns. Each foot has it's original blocking, undisturbed and in solid outstanding condition. Uniquely, even the rear feet feature the four claw design, though the finishing work on the ball at the back side was less elegantly executed than the rest of the design. More common desks of Massachusetts will often feature only bracket rear feet, or when they possess all four carved feet the rear legs will regularly only have three claws instead of four to save on labor. This desk has attention shown in every square inch of the case, even the unappreciated areas where time spent does not necessarily pay off for the 18th Century craftsman.
This is an incredibly fine work of art with intense originality in almost every facet of the desk. It is an investment grade collector piece for anyone passionate about Eastern Massachusetts Early American craftsmanship. It is a strike point for any collection, and absolutely brings a room together. As a conversation piece that will never lose it's flavor and in outstanding condition, this is a piece that will be cherished in your family for generations to come.
Woods: Primary, Mahogany; Secondary, White Pine
Inscriptions: Shell carved drawer and the drawer below it penciled "M" at the back of the frame, possibly indicating M for "middle" as these are in the middle of the gallery. Most tiny drawers inscribed with correlating numbers on the bottoms, 1-9. Inside of the desk upright post has a pencil inscription, appearing to read "Joho".
Measurements:
44" wide at the feet, 40 3/8" wide at the case
22 1/2" deep at the feet, 20 5/8" deep at the case
43 3/8" high to top of case, 32 1/2" high to desk surface
Condition Report:
Refinished, scratches, minor filled areas, scars (particularly around hardware) and minor dings throughout. Batwing pulls and escutcheons replaced in nearly the same holes as the original hardware. Locks replaced. Hinges replaced with some patching. Runners added to underside of drawers as rabbets have lost some strength. Some presence of rose head nails, others are iron forged cut nails. Third drawer is without a lock. Back was removed at one point to add strength to the case, whereupon the back brace that dovetails into the base and top is also screwed into the back with a more modern screw. Back was then placed back on using late 19th century screws, probably the last time it was touched. No key. Some light sun bleaching, though the case is actually slightly darker in overall color.

This is a remarkably preserved English Chippendale Period Kneehole Desk, circa 1740-50. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides - there is no veneer on this desk, just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms - all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction.
Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer, appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers - it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk.
Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment, appearing to be part of the frame design, but actually pulls outward smoothly as an extra hand dovetailed drawer. This is a unique addition for the craftsman to make, as many of these knee hole desks are without such innovations.
The wide top drawer pulls out to reveal a full dust shelf, protecting drawers below from saw dust and other debris as it opens and closes. The first few inches are solid mahogany, through which the inner boards of the desk tenon through, joining the frame permanently and invisibly. Beyond that are Pine secondary woods, appearing to be Yellow Pine. In the center of the desk, a small door swings in the knee hole on original brass hinges secured with original hand cut screws to reveal a compartment divided by a single oak shelf.
The desk rests over bracket feet, each entirely original with all original blocking as well. When looking at the desk from the underside, the unfinished hand craftmanship is evident in every square inch. Some of the feet have been resecured with screws from the underside, noted in the photos below, though the feet themselves have been preserved. Through the underside, rose head nails are driven into the mahogany side boards above.
The back of the desk is lined with several thin oak boards, each with grains running perpendicular to the base, tacked with tiny nails and nearly black with oxidization. Later nails secure these backboards, probably readjusted for shrinking along the grains.
This is an incredible find, quite rare in this condition and with this outstanding color and patination. With almost every aspect of the desk maintained with full originality and no adjustments, this is an acquisition for the serious collector and home decorator alike. It's petite dimensions and stunning visual appeal make it suitable for any formal setting, with a very broad array of design purposes it can aptly fill: it is the perfect width to rest between two windows in a small room as a strikepoint piece in a living area, a wonderful bedroom chest of drawers with desk functionality and as a small desk in a study. This is a special piece you and your family will certainly cherish for generations to come.
