Historical Context: The Elamite Civilization started in the lowland Khuzestan about the late 4th and early 3rd millennia. Known as Elam, geographically, Elam included more than Khuzestan; it was a combination of the lowlands and the immediate highland areas to the north and east. Traditionally it was a federated governmental structure based an overlord ruling over vassal princes. In earliest times the overlord lived in Susa, which functioned as a federal capital.
Elam appears in the Old Testament Table of Nations (Gen. 10.22), and an Elamite king whose name has comedown to us as Kedor-Laomer is mentioned in a later chapter of Genesis (14.1), as well.
Description: Bronze Spear Point, Amlash, Iran region

Reference No.: 7Date: -700Category: Tribal, Exotic, and AntiquityLocation of Origin: Latin AmericaPrice: 16000Medium/Materials: StoneDimensions: 7in (d) x 6in (h) x 4in (w)Description: A stylized stone mortar used by shamans for ceremonial rituals primarily to crush psychedelic substances such as the San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi), which contains mescaline or Vilca beans (Anadenanthera colubrina) which contain other psychedelic agents.Provenance: Private New England CollectionAdditional Information: The Chavin culture, one of the oldest in Peru, had vanished long before written sources appeared. And while caves containing bones of mastodons and llamas suggest that there was human occupation dating from as far back as 12,000 BC, it is believed that the Chavin culture started around 900 BC. The Chavin civilization was eventually conquered by the Incas less than a hundred years before the arrival of the Spaniards. At its height from 400 to 600 BC, the Chavin civilization is regarded for its intense design skill fueled by the ritual use of psychedelic drugs. Often the Chavin culture is described as cult-like and there is no significant evidence that indicates that the culture was an empire or a state power; as in the main Temple, there are no military structures nor any indication of major public works like irrigation or housing. Two of the main motifs in Chavin iconography are shapeshifting feline heads and the transformation of humans into something else, which suggest the intertwining of cultures from both the coast and the mountains and likely also from the jungle on the other side of the Andes. « Less

The fertile Nile Valley attracted people as early as 15,000 B.C., who settled along the banks to harvest wild grasses for cereal grains. Flint blades were made for this purpose, and also for hunting and war. What made this blade a perfect tool or weapon is the same element which makes it a work of art, namely its perfect balance and elegant simplicity. The shape is essentially triangular, divided into two sections, with the upper elongated portion rising to a slightly blunt end; and the sides of the lower part descending more quickly to a sharp point. The variegated surface is both rough and smooth, elemental yet sophisticated, pleasing to the eye and dramatic in its latent power. - (PF.4772) « Less

The creation of tools utilizing the natural environment is what distinguishes man from animal. What was once created using stone and wood has, over the centuries, evolved into metalworking and modern-day plastics. But it is the simplest tools, those carved from stone, which allowed mankind to conquer the natural environment and to prosper. Holding this flint axe head in our hand, although it appears rough and crude, we are holding the nascent breath of the great civilization of Egypt. From such axe heads would eventually rise the pyramids. Tools allowed mankind to alter the natural settings and to create his own habitats. An axe head like this one, when tied securely to a wooden shaft, could be used to chop wood or to carve meat from a fallen prey. This axe head represents the innate human drive to alter the environment, to innovate, and to create something stronger and more durable. It is in these earliest tools that we are able to witness the birth of civilization. From such tools, mankind learned to carve stones and rocks into new shapes and forms that suited the needs of the people evolving from axe heads to temples. - (PF.6071) « Less

The island nation of Rhodes was an immensely successful commercial power of the Aegean. They strategically sided with Athens but, when in jeopardy, negotiated favorable surrenders to Sparta, Alexander the Great, and Demetrios Poliorketes, allowing them to sustain at least some degree of independence based on neutrality. Rhodes was named for the rose, depicted on the reverse of this coin. A portrait of Helios, the sun god, wearing a crown of rays graces the obverse. This image was based upon the head of the great statue of Helios, better known as the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Colossus memorialized the war with Demetrios Poliorketes. He unsuccessfully attacked the city for over a year, around 305-304 B.C. Eventually, a settlement was negotiated and Poliorketes abandoned his siege towers constructed from valuable timbers that the Rhodeans in turn sold off for shipbuilding. The proceeds from this sale were invested in the huge (105 ft.) bronze statue of Helios standing at the entrance of the harbor. While the famous statue served as a reminder of the city's fortitude during the siege and became a tourist attraction, it only stood until 227 B.C. when it was toppled by an earthquake. - (MT.117) « Less
