This is a beautiful brush pot with the 8 immortals motif. This eight immortals is a group and legendary daoist figures. The figures, not in any order are as follows: the double-gourd, which contains all magical medicines is Li Tieguai, peach and fan that resurrects the dead is Zhongli Quan, flower basket or sometimes a flute is Lan Caihe, bamboo drum and rods is Zhang Guo, with lotus is He Ziangu, the sword, and sometime a fly whisk is Lu Dongbin, the flute of Han Xiangxi and Castanets of Cao Guojiu. The eight immortals has it origin during the Yuan dynasty and not earlier than that. The brush pot carries the reign mark of the Qing dynasty, emperor Guanxu (1875-1908) and of the period. There is no hairline crack, glaze fritting, repair or restoration. There is small unglazed patch on the inside of the brush pot as shown in picture 5 at exactly 12 o’clock. This does not interfere with the aesthetic. There are small minute bubble burst on certain parts of the paints. Firing or manufacturing faults (picture 4) and blue black patches on and near the rim is quite visible all around the brush pot, as shown in the pictures. There are also minute pin holes. Other than that, it is in very good condition. The dimension of the brush pot : The thickness is 1.9cm, height is 16.8cm and diameter is 20.8cm. This is a small mid Qing dynasty bronze cloisonné censer with an elongated body. It is design in the likeness of those in the Ming dynasty, with lotus flowers band and scrolling foliages. On the shoulder of the cloisonné, it is decorated all round with a band ruyi with red and blue color. It is supported four massive fat and short cabriole legs and with two ear like handles. This is a very beautifully potted and elegantly curved piece of white glazed Wang Bingrong brush pot. The brush pot is curved and molded in high relief. It is also unusual in that most brush pots either have curved design and or color glazing in low relief and in cylindrical shape. For this Wang Bingrong brush pot, it is unusual in that the entire shape of the brush pot is in the curving of a pine tree trunk. It is beautifully curved and sculptured in very detailed form with a luohan resting under a pine tree sipping wine while his left arm resting on a large jar of wine shown flowing out freely. Behind the pine tree, sits a pile of rocks in Taihu formation. Nothing much is known about the background of Mr. Wang Bingrong. Even his date of birth and period that he lives in, is debatable. It is generally accepted that he lives and work between during the Dao Guang period (1821~1850) well into the second half of the 19th century. The only fact that is known about Wang Bingrong is that he is a well know porcelain artisan and was widely acknowledge for transforming the bamboo brush pot curving onto porcelain. He successfully introduced the technique of bamboo curving onto porcelain with curved decoration. There are no repairs or restoration, no cracks and chips. The brush pot is in good condition. A healthy round-faced, plump figured, seated boy wearing a typical high hat of boy doll figures of the period. He is also wearing a checker-patterned loincloth. His hands are positioned under his chin, where he is holding his hat ties together. The stoneware was formed with a mold (you can see the faint molding line on both sides and underneath--it is not a crack.) The surface has a natural patina from age. Age: Late 19th Century. A large lacquered wood mask in the form of a demon with bulging eyes and the kangi for King in a red circle on its forehead. Probably a festival or theater mask. A dramatic mask from the late Qing Dynasty. May have had a lower jaw? Shows wear from use and age but is in good overall condition. Much of the original lacquer remains.
