Large by Moravian standards, this six inch tile depicts a simple stick figure of a man. If I remember correctly, this image was borrowed from a belt given to Wm Penn by the native Americans. The figure is deeply impressed and glazed in green, the rest of the tile left in a raw red clay. As with most larger Moravian tiles, the clay used was prone to warp and crack in the drying and firing process. Whereas most potters would throw damaged items away, Henry Chapman Mercer embraced the hand made quality and admired the flaws. Unmarked on the back. A big white bowl filled with red flowers and green leaves sits slightly off center on this tile with an amber glaze. The quality is very dimensional and it is achieved in an uncommon way, where the background is on the highest plane, then the flowers are sitting a little lower, and the leaves lowest yet. It's the only tile like that that I have ever encountered, which might lead to the paper lable on the fron that says "Einzelstück Handgemalt" which translates to, one of a kind hand made.
