Decorative 19th Century PolyChrome Painted Putto on a wooden base, H:12 1/4" W:5" D:4". Polychrome is one of the terms used to describe the use of multiple colors in one entity. A very early example of polychrome decoration was found in the Parthenon atop the Acropolis of Athens. At the time the English Victorians encountered the classical ruins the paint had completely weathered off, and so the Victorian's impression was that classical beauty was expressed only through shape and composition, lacking in robust colors. It was this impression that informed the classical revival movements. As true in the architecture of our early history is the revival and use of Polychrome paint on surfaces of the Furniture and Decorative Arts throughout history. Decorative 19th Century object would any household with the fine carving and polychrome paint and appealing face and outstretched arms mounted on a wooden plinth base. Polar Bear Walking by Peter Parr (Canadian-Inuit, born 1970). A large sculpture of a polar bear carved from green Serpentine. Circa 2000. Size: 17 inches length x 9 inches height x 8 inches depth. Peter Parr is an Inuit sculptor who works in the Cape Dorset region, at the southern extremity of Baffin Island, Canada. This region is home to many Inuit artists and stone carvers. Peter Parr is from a family of artists. He is the son of Nuna Parr and his grandparents were graphic artists. Peter has been carving since the age of eight and his sculpture has been increasing in popularity as it is rooted in his love for nature and the wildlife of the surrounding landscape. In this example, he has rendered in green serpentine a large polar bear, which he has captured as it walks. The sculpture is signed by him on the underside and retains the Canadian government label. It was purchased from Galerie D'Art Vincent in Ottawa in about 2000.   « Less
