This is an impressive and beautifully patinaed Sideboard made from a stunning walnut during the second half of the 19th century. This handsome and massive piece is elegantly embellished with acanthus and floral patterns and highlighted by boldly sculpted three quarter tapered columns flanking the façade offering a large storage capacity thanks to a pair of drawers mounted with their original brass handles upon a large Niche providing a single shelf, all standing on an intricately molded pediment supported by round and square feet. A Pierre Chapo massive elm buffet. Of a rectangular shape, with four drawers, the peculiarity of this piece of furniture is the blue enameled lava plate covering the top of the buffet. The wood work and the mounting are of a very good quality. Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) is born in a family of craftmen. After his regular studies, he worked for some time in the workshop of a navy carpenter. He was graduated architect in 1958 from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, after having travelled in the United States and in Europe. He opened his own workshop first in Clamart as well as a shop in Paris. His work was inspired by Charlotte Perriand. Ten years later he settled down in Gordes, where he based the Société Chapo. He then dedicated himself mainly to his work as a carpenter and a cabinetmaker and gave a serie of lectures about his great passion, wood. Very good condition. Design Period, Circa: 1965. Dim: W: 41,3 in - D: 20,5in - H: 20,9in. / Buffet en orme massif de Pierre Chapo. D'une forme rectangulaire et avec quatre tiroirs, la particularité de ce meuble est la plaque bleue en lave émaillée qui recouvre la partie supérieure du buffet. Le montage et le travail d'ébènisterie est de très grande qualité. Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) né dans une famille d'artisans, fait ses études au lycée de Romainville, puis à Vierzon entre 1937 et 1947. Il travaille pendant quelque temps dans l'atelier d'un charpentier de marine, puis entame des études d'architecte à l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Il sera diplômé en 1958, ayant souvent interrompu le cours de ses études pour voyager aux Etats-Unis et en Europe. Il ouvre alors un atelier à Clamart ainsi qu'un magasin à Paris, boulevard de l'Hôpital. Il s'est beaucoup inspiré du travail de Charlotte Perriand. Dix ans plus tard il acquiert une maison à Gordes où il installe le siège de la Société Chapo S.A.. Il se consacre alors essentiellement à la menuiserie et à l'ébénisterie tout en donnant des conférences sur sa grande passion, le bois. This stunning and tall piece is mounted by a flat molded cornice sitting upon a pair of glass doors mounted with their original glass panes and revealing an efficient display area, all standing above the buffet below, providing additional storage thanks to a 2-drawer frieze and a pair of recessed paneled doors hiding another large compartment.
