Beautiful as the moonlit sky shot through with golden stars, lapis lazuli has been treasured since the dawn of civilization. Its sources are few, mostly in eastern mines of what is now Afghanistan, and its rarity made it the favored jewel of ancient royalty. The kings and queens of Mesopotamia had their cylinder seals carved of lapis; the Egyptians made their most precious amulets from it. So eager were the Egyptians for objects made from lapis that they created an imitation paste from the ground stone. During the Renaissance, the rich ultramarine of the great master painters was also made from powdered lapis, brought overland on arduous journeys that lasted years. Poets from Ancient Sumer through the modern age have used it as metaphor of beauty and rarity. Besides its appealing lovliness, the gem is thought to have curative powers and is used as a remedy for fever, gall-stones, sleeplessness and above all, melancholy. Who, looking upon this splendid stone, could feel anything but happiness? - (FJ.3269)Medium: Lapis lazuli « Less

The rare and beautiful Eilat stone is named for Eilat near the Gulf of Aqaba, where the famous copper mines of king Solomon were located in antiquity. The gem is still found there today. The cool blue-green of an undersea grotto, Eilat stone owes its radiant color to a combination of malachite and azurite, both copper based. Strong healing powers are ascribed to Eilat stone: it is especially useful to prevent weakness of the bones and to aid the absorption of vitamins and minerals into the system. The gem is said to open the body to more rapid healing, and to insure that the process is more complete. It helps rid the body of all toxins. Spiritually, Eilat stone is valued for releasing emotions and for soothing and calming the wearer. To look into its rich blue depths is to feel oneself transported to a quiet, peaceful place, far from the cares and stresses of daily life. - (FJ.3508)Origin: Israel Collection: Eilat Stone Pendant Medium: Eilat/Gold « Less

Since ancient times the peacock has captured the imagination of poets, artists, and lovers of beauty. This fantastic creature, the king of birds, is symbolic of loveliness, luxury, and pride. The peacock was the emblem of Hera, queen of the Olympian gods. The sailors of king Solomon’s navy are said to have brought peacocks back from a distant voyage to grace the palace gardens. This fantastic bird has a body of radiant gold and a tail of palest green jade. He holds a tasseled ball in his beak, enameled to the rich colors of a living peacock's plumage. Graceful and majestic, he is certain to make the woman who wears him feel like royalty in her own right. - (FJ.3773)Medium: Jade/Gold « Less

This genuine Siberian emerald weighs 23 carats and has been set in a mahta-shaped gold pendant adorned with 4 genuine Burmese rubies. Centuries ago, in the temples and synagogues of the holy land, the fragrant smoke of incense filled the air. This blend of rare spices and gums was though to please the deity and the to purify the air of the sanctuary. A costly sacrifice, incense was considered the worthy gift of princes and kings. The mahta, or incense shovel, was employed in the ritual of incense burning and was also used to remove the ashes afterwards. This golden mahta echoes forms from the classical world. Instead of perfumed incense, it holds the cool fire of a rare cabochon emerald. A contemporary variation on an ancient theme, it is certain to make whoever wears it today feel like royalty. - (FJ.3846)Origin: Russia and Myanmar Collection: Jewelry Style: Gem Stone Pendants Medium: Emerald and Rubies « Less

This exquisite brooch of 18 karat gold has been set with 49 genuine round diamonds with a total weight of 0.96 carats, 7 baguette diamonds with a total weight of 0.13 carats, More »
This exquisite brooch of 18 karat gold has been set with 49 genuine round diamonds with a total weight of 0.96 carats, 7 baguette diamonds with a total weight of 0.13 carats, and with 36 genuine sapphires with a total weight of 0.87 carats. Perhaps no gem delights the senses like the diamond. This most precious of stones seems to burn with a fire deep within. Crystallized carbon, formed under tremendous pressure over millennia, the diamond is famed for its everlasting hardness. In this capacity, the gem has come to symbolize eternal faithfulness and is the traditional focus of the engagement band. Because early cultures lacked the technology to facet the diamond, the gem has only become popular in the last two centuries. Diamonds are normally colorless, but they are also found in shades including yellow, pink, and blue. In eastern belief, the diamond is said to enhance the full spectrum of energies in the body, mind, and spirit. Within the circle of gems, the diamond defines the standards of beauty, rarity, and preciousness. According to oriental legend, the earth rested on a giant sapphire, whose blue color was reflected in the bowl of the sky. A variety of corundum colored with aluminum oxide, sapphire is one of the four gems called "precious" today. In hue, sapphires range from dark to pale blue, to black. Its rarity contributed to its reputation as a magic stone of immense and all-encompassing power. It is said to ward off infectious disease, to dispel confusion, and enhance clarity of mind. The sapphire has also been thought since antiquity to bring good fortune to those who wear it. Anyone adorned with this rich blue gem will feel very lucky indeed. - (FJ.4010)Collection: Modern Jewelry Medium: Diamonds, Sapphires « Less

According to ancient Oriental legend, the earth rested on a giant sapphire, whose blue color was reflected in the bowl of the sky. Though the stone was known in the West, it was rarely used by any but royalty until the Christian era. This rarity contributed to its reputation as a magic stone of immense and all-encompassing power, capable of warding off every kind of pestilence and contagious disease. The sapphire is also reputed to bring good luck to its owner and to promote wisdom and clarity of mind. The deep and vibrant blue of this gem makes its precious reputation a deserved one. Considered in the Ancient East to be the luckiest of all gems, the ruby is said to confer upon its owner protection from all misfortune either manmade or natural. Like the sapphire, the ruby is a member of the corundum family, an aluminum oxide which owes its bright red color to the trace presence of chromium. The major sources for this mineral bath in antiquity and today is the Orient, especially Burma, Thailand and India. On a carat for carat basis, the ruby is generally the most expensive of all precious stones. The most prized hue for the gem is called "pigeon's blood", a deep red touched with violet; a necklace of these stones is said to have been given by Alexander the Great to the Queen Mother of Persia. However, because of its Eastern origins, the ruby was little known to the Classical cultures of the West. In the East, especially India, the ruby was much sought after; Sanskrit writings refer to it as the "king of gems". Its red color associated it medicinally with diseases of the blood, and it was especially valued to ward off pestilence, to staunch bleeding, as well as cure diseases of the stomach. in Eastern belief, it also promoted peace and prosperity for its owner, and granted him invulnerability from all evil. - (FJ.4188)Origin: Siri Lanka Collection: Gold Pendant Medium: Ruby/Sapphire/Gold « Less

Steeped in ancient symbolism, this exquisitely carved jade pendant evinces an aura of spiritual beauty. Here we observe the sensitive rendering of a mother and child, suggesting to us the timeless miracle of life and perpetual renew al. The woman holds in her hand a lidded vase, one of the eight emblems of good luck in Chinese Buddhism, and a symbol of wholeness and the concept of supreme intelligence triumphant over birth and death. Behind the mother and child our eye is directed to a large nimbus, the ancient visual expression of supernatural force. Beneath the child appears a beautifully carved fish, again hearkening us back to age-old spirited concepts, for the fish is believed by many to be a psychic being, endowed with heightened powers concerning the unconscious. The character of the fish encompasses other notions as well. By reason of its bobbin-like shape, the fish represents a kind of "bird of the netherworld", symbolic of sacrifice and of the relationship between heaven and earth. On the other hand, by virtue of the extraordinary number of its eggs, it is also a symbol of fertility. In this sculpted jade pendant a complexity of spirit combines with intricate detail, revealing to us an extraordinarily potent work of art, one that touches our deepest emotive sensibilities. - (FJ.5302)Origin: China Collection: Jade Pendants Medium: Jade « Less
