A CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN CELEDON AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE DISH, CIRCA 1750. ; ; ; ; ;The circular dish has an everted rim with molded key motif and a shallow well molded with cloud scrolls. ;The dish is glazed in celadon with five lobed reserves decorated in underglaze-blue. ;The central reserve depicts a figure fishing in a stream ;with trees near by. ;The side panels depict alternatively a riverscape, and bamboo with narcissus issuing from rockwork. Here longevity is symbolized in the bamboo, a plant which remains green throughout the winter. ;Good fortune is also represented by narcissus, the Chinese Water Fairy, which is believed to bring good fortune for twelve months if it blooms on the New Year. A SET OF SIX CHINESE EXPORT FAMILLE ROSE PLATES, CIRCA 1760 The plates have a central reserve in the shape of a palm leaf that is outlined in an overglaze turquoise enamel. ;A large floral spring of rose-pink peonies and other flowers lie within the reserve. ;The border is painted with numerous branches and blossoms of white prunis and brown bamboo; all against ground of sepia swirls. ;Rimmed in ocher. ''The white enamel was an important element in the famille rose palette, for it made possible the mixing of shades of opaque colors through which three-dimensional effects of modeling in the Western style could be obtained.'' A GOOD CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL LARGE DISH, CIRCA 1750, ARMS OF RAPER (sometimes Roper) impaling GROSVENOR. The plate is finely decorated in "famille-rose" enamels. ;In the center are two butterflies hovering above flowering peonies and a rock decorated en grisaille. ;This scene is within a gilt spearhead band at the cavetto. ;The sides of the rim are decorated with floral sprays heightened in gilding. ;On the top of the rim is a gold and blue antelope''s head crest. ;The bottom of the rim shows the blue and gold. Small glaze crack on rim. Diameter: 11 5/16 inches (28.8 cm.). Reference: ; ;A candlestick from this service is illustrated by Howard, p.502, no. P22; and a plate was in the collection of Francois Hervouet, sold at Sotheby''s in Monte Carlo on June 22, 1987, lot 1705. This second son was probably a son or nephew of Mathew Raper of London. ;This Raper family later lived in Abeeford & Langthorne in Yorkshire. ;A Mr. J. Raper was the junior super cargo on the "Harrison" at Canton in 1734 while Mathew Raper Junior was member of the Council at Canton from 1767 ( Chief in 1778 & 1779) and returned to England in 1781. Sir Thomas Grosvenor, the 3rd Baronet, had married in 1677, Mary Davis, an heiress of Ebuery and inherited vast estates in London. ;It is probably from one of his five sons that this Miss Grosvenor descended. « Less
