This genuine oval-faceted ruby from Sri Lanka weighs 1.30 carats and has been mounted in an 18 karat gold ring embellished with 12 radiant fully-cut diamonds from South Africa weighing a total of 0.53 carats. Ruby is the red variety of corundum, the second hardest natural mineral known to mankind. The red color in ruby is caused by trace amounts of the element chromium. Ruby is primarily found in India, Burma and Ceylon. The ruby was considered in the Ancient East to be the luckiest of gems, able to confer protection from all misfortunes, manmade or natural. Sanskrit writing refers to it as the king of gems. Because of its rich red color, ruby is thought to avert diseases of the blood and stomach. In eastern philosophy, ruby promotes peace and prosperity for its owner, and grants invulnerability from evil. Its warm glow casts a spell over the heart of all who behold it. This genuine ruby from Sri Lanka has been mounted in an 18 karat gold ring. The name ruby comes from the Latin Rubeus because of its red color. As a rough stone the ruby can appear dull; but when cut, the luster can approach that of a diamond. In fact they are the hardest minerals after the diamond and extra care must be taken in cutting and setting them. This gorgeous ruby is a cabochon, meaning a style of cutting where the upper part is domed and the lower portion is level or slightly domed. Much mythology has grown around this wonderful gem. The Greek philosopher Archelaus (5th century B.C.) said the ruby's natural warmth was so great it could melt wax. It was believed they could shield against adversity, protect houses, orchards and restore youth! One fact is certain-- when adorning someone' s hand this lovely ring will be eye catching and simply beautiful. - (FJ.6228)Origin: Sri Lanka Collection: Jewelry Style: Gem Stone Rings Medium: Ruby and Gold « Less

This Precious Gemstone Has Been Set in a Modern 18 Karat Gold Ring. Weight 7.5 carats. “The price of wisdom is above rubies,†says Job, implying that rubies were highly treasured as early as Biblical times. Indeed, the respect and appreciation for rubies has always transcended all geographical boundaries and social class. One of the most precious of all gemstones, rubies are the red variety of corundum (the blue versions are sapphire) and are an incredibly hard stone-- the only gemstone harder being diamonds. The ruby has acquired special attributes from its admirers over the centuries. It has been regarded as a symbol of freedom, charity, dignity and divine power. The Burmese believed that gemstones ripened like fruit; the redder the color, the riper the ruby. Likewise, a flawed ruby was considered over mature. Large, gem quality rubies have always been very rare. Although huge gems are described in Medieval romances and Oriental literature, these stone were most likely exaggerated by the imaginations of creative authors or were actually garnets or spinels. This elegant ring displays the precious gemstone in a sumptuous gold setting. The refined ring presents the stunning centerpiece without drawing attention away from it. The simple yet sophisticated style of this ring is a true classic. If this ruby ring were a fruit, it would surely taste as sumptuous to our tongues as it appears to our eyes. - (FJ.6934)Origin: Burma Medium: Ruby-Gold « Less
