The frit body is ob baluster form, with a sloping shoulder and a straight cylindrical neck, with an attached strap handle. This jug is made of composite white fritware. It is covered in a turquoise blue glaze, which stops short of the foot-ring. The decoration is painted, not splashed. Three black lines are painted on the mouth, body and foot of the jug. The bird’s head ewer had a long history in the Middle East. In ancient Iran, for example, they were used as ritual vessels and frequently referenced in Persian poetry. Among Zoroastrians the cockerel was revered because its crowing heralds the day and drives away the demon infested night. Later tradition records that the Prophet prohibited men from cursing this bird.
