Ottoman Blue and White Ewer - PF.2625, Origin: Iznik, Turkey, Circa: 1700 AD to 1800 AD, Dimensions: 9" (22.9cm) high x 6" (15.2cm) wide, Collection: Islamic, Style: Ottoman, Medium: Fritware, At its height, the Ottoman Empire was one of the world’s great powers, controlling much of southeastern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The roots of the Ottoman Empire can be traced back to the migration of Turkic tribes from Central Asia into Anatolia. Expert horsemen, fierce and highly mobile, these armies encountered little resistance as they moved westward and settled, eventually uniting under the banner of the Seljuk Empire. Back in the East, the rise of the Mongols sent progressive waves of Turkic refugees fleeing the armies of the Khan. The turmoil created by this influx of people, as well as direct confrontations with the Mongols themselves, eventually resulted in the dissolution of the Seljuk Empires into several fractured independent states. One of these states, ruled by Osman I, from whom the word Ottoman is derived, would become the Ottoman Empire. « Less

Aubergine Glazed Zoomorphic Ewer - LO.644, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1225 AD to 1250 AD, Dimensions: 8.75" (22.2cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Gurgan, Medium: More »
Aubergine Glazed Zoomorphic Ewer - LO.644, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1225 AD to 1250 AD, Dimensions: 8.75" (22.2cm) high, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Gurgan, Medium: Earthenware. A spherical body with a raised collar line around the shoulders and the flaring neck, a funnel- shaped ribbed spout of zoomorphic connotations with applique' eyes on the sides, opposite a bent handle. On either sides of the neck a ringed loop attached. The surface is covered with a lead-based aubergine glaze, slighly washed on one side of the body. This ewer must have drawn inspiration from contemporary metalware in Seljuq Iran. Ewer with zoomorphic spouts were rather popular, not only in Afghanistan but all over Central Asia, all featuring a globular body and a funnel shaped slighly bent or upright spout on one side and the opening on the other. They almost invariably were made of buff or red earthenware and coated with a lead-based glaze. Similar vessels have been found not only in Bamiyan , but also in Khurasan and other centres of Central Asia, though their production is attested between the 12th and the early 13th century, i.e. prior to the Mongol invasion (AD 1220). For a discussion on zoomorphic lead-glazed ewers see: G. Fehervari, Ceramics of the Islamic World, 2000: pp.147-151. « Less

A rare Eastern French FAIENCE plate in red-pink, green, and blue enamels of a noble fierce eagle wearing a crown from the Strasbourg region, Les Islettes or Luneville, dating More »
A rare Eastern French FAIENCE plate in red-pink, green, and blue enamels of a noble fierce eagle wearing a crown from the Strasbourg region, Les Islettes or Luneville, dating to early 19th century. The plate is exceptional in detail, finely painted and superbly colored in the enamels typical of Eastern French faience of the 18th century. The fiesty eagle symbolizes Napoleon. If so the plate dates accuarately expect the date 1810, before Napoleon was defeated by Wellington at Waterloo in 1815. The 8.34 Inch plate is in very fine condition except for some very minor edge glaze wear or loss, typical of early faience.

Safavid Glazed Vase - FJ.0012, Origin: Iran, Circa: 16 th Century AD to 17 th Century AD, Collection: Islamic Art Style: Safavid, Medium: Glazed Terracotta, The origins of More »
Safavid Glazed Vase - FJ.0012, Origin: Iran, Circa: 16 th Century AD to 17 th Century AD, Collection: Islamic Art Style: Safavid, Medium: Glazed Terracotta, The origins of the Safavid Dynasty can be traced back to the Safaviyeh Sufi order founded in the early 14th century in the city of Ardabil. From this base in northwestern Iran, the Safavids would go on to become the first native Persian dynasty to exert control over all of Iran since the fall of the Sassanids. Much like the ethnically diverse country they would rule, the Safavids were of mixed ancestry, including Kurdish, Greek, Azerbaijani, and Georgian lines. Although their religious roots were aligned with the Sunni Sufi order, by the early days of the 15th century, the Safavids switched sects, establishing the Twelver branch of Shiism as the official religion of the empire. The adoption of the Shia faith would have a profound impact on the future of Iran while bringing them into conflict with their Sunni neighbors, the Ottomans to the west and the Uzbeks to the northeast. « Less

Kashan Lustre Jar - GD.006R, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1200 AD to 1300 AD, Dimensions: 7.7" (19.6cm) high x 7.6" (19.3cm) wide, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Kashan, More »
Kashan Lustre Jar - GD.006R, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1200 AD to 1300 AD, Dimensions: 7.7" (19.6cm) high x 7.6" (19.3cm) wide, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Kashan, Medium: Fritware, The ceramic industry at Kashan dates back to the 10th century. Its heyday is seen with the beautiful lustre wares that are produced between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 14th century. There seem to be very little impact on the industry from the devastating Mongol invasions of the 13th century. This vase is in the ‘Miniature’ style. The term indicates a manner of depiction that is painted directly in lustrous pigment on to the glaze. The technique of a large central figure, seen previously in the ‘Monumental’ style is replaced by a surface divided into a number of friezes and zones. The general aspect of this style is that the vessels begin to be more finely potted and the motifs finely drawn. « Less
