Krishna is a Hindu deity often regarded as an incarnation of Vishnu. According to ancient epics, such as the Mahabharata, he was born of royal parents, the princess Devaki More »
Krishna is a Hindu deity often regarded as an incarnation of Vishnu. According to ancient epics, such as the Mahabharata, he was born of royal parents, the princess Devaki and her husband Vasudeva. Devaki’s brother had previously seized the throne unlawfully and deposed their father. A prophecy warned him that one of Devaki’s children would seek revenge for this unlawful act so he tried to obliterate them. Krishna escaped and was brought up by foster parents, Yasoda and Nanda in Gokul. Nanda was the head of a community of cow- herders hence Krishna’s association with cows, butter and milkmaids. He became known as ‘Govinda’ (finder of cows) or ‘Gopala’ (protector of cows) and is often depicted leaning against a standing cow.In this lively piece Krishna holds a round butter ball in his right hand. As a child he was notorious for stealing butter from his neighbours. Despite his mother’s protests he frequently escaped punishment. The left arm is extended to balance his body in a dancing movement suggestive of his mischievous joy. The right leg is raised and rests on what is possibly a lotus bud. The weight rests firmly on the left leg which is bent at the knee. The body is delightfully rotund with rounded belly, breasts and buttocks. As was customary, Krishna is depicted naked except for the jeweled ornaments (which are made of brass, whereas the main figure is of bronze) which are draped elegantly over the body. Particularly splendid is the high crown or mukuta, with the details highlighted by gilding. Although the dance of the butter thief (navanita-nritta-murti) is not an uncommon subject, it is certainly rarer than depictions of Krishna playing the flute. This is a detailed and well-executed work in excellent condition. (AM) - (OF.010)

This incredible miniature was created for private meditations. The four parts of the altarpiece depict: the Passions of Christ, the life of the Holy Family, the adoration of Mary, the Mother of God, Russian nobility praying to the icon of Madonna and Child. The altarpiece has a form of a typical mediaeval Russian chapel. The half domes of this symbolic building represent the life of Jesus from the crucifixion to his resurrection and glory in heaven and on earth. Each part of the altarpiece has a similar structural composition. The upper part consists of the major dramatic scene and the lower part depicts four narratives. An artist skillfully combined the religious stories of annunciation and baptism with the narratives, involving Russian nobility. The outer part of the altarpiece, decorated with an elaborate pattern of flowers and animalistic designs typical for Russian decorative style called "lubok", is inscribed: "We pray to Your Cross. We praise Your resurrection". This beautiful piece is an embodiment of the essence of Russian Orthodox religious doctrine. The narratives represented on this altarpiece reinforce the deespiritualconnection between the church and the royal lineage. - (PF.5184)Brass Miniature Altarpiece - PF.5184Origin:Russia Circa:1750ADto1900ADDimensions:7(17.8cm)highx4.5(11.4cm)wide Collection:Traveling Icons Style:Russian Orthodox Medium: Brass « Less

Set against a lovely blue enameled background are important scenes from the life of Jesus. The upper portion of the left panel depicts the crucifixion, with the crucified Christ occupying a central area. Two angels swoop from the heavens carrying robes or vestments, while God the Father watches from above. Jerusalem is shown in the style of a medieval Russian city, the sepulchral ground of Golgotha is cleverly represented in an abstract manner having thin, wavy bands to imitate bare rolling hills. Four square panels clockwise show the Annunciation, (appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary), the birth of Jesus, Jesus brought to the temple, and the Holy Family. On the upper portion of the right panel Christ is elevated to the Heavens. The Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost (represented as a dove), are contained within a type of wreath surrounded by angels. We see on the four panels below the baptism of the infant Jesus, His baptism by St. John, Christ's entrance into Jerusalem, and his Glorification as the Son of God. Through an engraver's superb skill we are able to experience the birth, worldly travels and travails, the passion, death and transfiguration of Christ-- all created with skill and an obvious love for thesubject.-(PF.5185)Enameled Brass Traveling Icon - PF.5185Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 ADto1900ADDimensions:7.25" (18.4cm) high x8.25"(21.0cm)wide Collection:Traveling Icons Style:Russian Orthodox

A very long tradition exists in Russia of the pious carrying portable icons with them while traveling. They are often, as with this fine example, so elaborately detailed they provide a visual narrative of Jesus’ life on a small, and a very personal scale. The upper portion of the central panel shows the installation of the cross, with the background structures and ornamentation done in the style of medieval Russia. Below, running clockwise is the resurrection of Christ, His elevation and glory in heaven, enthronement of the Virgin Mary, and her death. The front cover has the cross with the walls and buildings in the distance set in an oval, bordered by two columns and ornate foliage. The inscription above and below the upper portion of the cross reads, "King of Glory, Jesus Son of God, Christ. The right panel follows this theme on the upper section of the right panel with the glorification of the Virgin surrounded by saints and angels. Below we see an icon of the Virgin Mary worshiped by six figures including Saints Alexander and Cyril. Next to it is the same arrangement except for the substitution of Prince Vasiley, followed by a panel with Saints Antony and Alexey, and then Saints Antony and Theodosius. Each of the miniature icons shows the Virgin holding the infant Jesus in a different posture, while the faithful offer their homage and gifts in a variety of ways. Upon the upper area of the left panel is the mystical depiction of Christ's elevation to heaven in the presence of God the Father, Who is offering His blessings. Four scenes from Jesus’ life are depicted below: baptism as a baby, His baptism by St. John, entrance in Jerusalem, and Christ's glorification. Contained within this charming triptych are the images of Jesus’ miraculous life on earth, and His transcendence in the afterlife of heaven. - (PF.5186) « Less
