Stock #: 1013943 Size: 23cm high Price: AU$ 1,250.00 US$ 1,312.50 € 987.50 £ 825.00 Rare Derby vase, of urn shape, with straight sided body sitting on a spreading foot, the lower body gadrooned, the foot moulded with acanthus leaves, the rim mounted with two large goats heads, the body painted with a Kakiemon style pattern of flowers reserved on iron red ground with chrysanthemum mons, the foot with similar decoration. Patch marks to base, also inscribed '52' Circa 1785 References: This rare form is apparently unrecorded in the literature. Another example is in the Lorraine Rosenberg Reference Collection in Geelong, with a rams head handle rather than a goat. The absence of gold, and naive style of painting suggests that this piece Condition: Stem with old bolt repair, one horn restored, small rim section restored, crack beneath body, wear to enamels.   « Less

Signed Val St. Lambert, Belgium Depose, sky blue cut to clear vase/covered urn. Great hunt scene replete with a Buck Deer, Pheasant, Grouse, and underbrush. The Deer and fowl have amazing detail. The Deers fur, muscles, and antlers are well done and have a lifelike appearance. There is a Buck on both sides of the piece. An inordinate amount of detail and work involved in this piece. It is a gorgeous sky blue cut to clear. There are no chips, cracks or repairs with the only metion being some expected shelf abbraision to the bottom of foot. Signed with a Val St. Lambert sticker affixed to the bottom of the foot dating this piece to the late 19th Century. A great asset to the collector of VSL, European Art Glass or Art Glass in general. Stands 8 1/2" tall to the top of the multi facet jewel cut finial.   « Less

One Monumental Classical Style Terracotta Covered Urn, with a decorative pineapple finial, and the lobed body with palmettes, garlanded by grape leaves and clusters, flanked by decorative acanthive leave motif handles, supported by a plinth base, H:61.5" Diameter:23". The origin and history of the Classical Urn especially used in the garden, the urns begins long before the ancient gardens of Mesopotamia and Egypt. The Greeks first used garden urns for practical purposes; a lack of water and rocky soils led them to use huge terracotta urns for plantings. Excavations around temples in Athens found rows of terracotta urns inserted into the ground where shrubs were planted. The Greeks of the Classical Age used finely decorated garden urns in terracotta, marble, and bronze in their gardens. Almost all of Europe borrowed this practice, from Rome to Constantinople. In Western Europe, the rediscovery of classical garden urns occurred in the 15th century with the uncovering of examples in excavations from places such as in the ruins of Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli outside Rome. Raphael and other Renaissance artists used garden urns in their paintings. This practice expanded to France, as the French Kings were eager customers for new and antique garden urns. Louis XVI, the Sun King, used many garden urns - large and small - to adorn the gardens of his new Chateau of Versailles. In the mid to late 18th century, classical garden urns became an essential part of gardens all over Europe. The advent of inexpensive examples in cast iron greatly expanded the potential market for garden urns and they were to be seen almost every middle class garden by the mid 19th century.
