Heavy platter for a punch bowl, Mettlach Villeroy & Boch, pattern 2087, circa 1902. This platter has the relief ornamentation and colors popular in the Art Nouveau period. More »
Heavy platter for a punch bowl, Mettlach Villeroy & Boch, pattern 2087, circa 1902. This platter has the relief ornamentation and colors popular in the Art Nouveau period. The scrolled plaques contain incised sayings concerning drinking in old German script. In nearly mint condition, with manufacturing defects of clay pinholes in the center portion of the charger. The glaze is fully in the pinholes, they do not detract from the appearance and they are original to the piece. There is one very tiny ding on the edge of the platter rim, not visible from the front or the back, only when you look closely at the edge do you see this rough spot of less than 1 millimeter. (I just mention it to be precise!) Marked with the Castle with its'' linked VB, pattern number, date ''02'' and ususal Mettlach mystery number on the back. Lovely SOFT colors of sage green, ivory and coral red. This piece is heavy, 8 lbs. Location: Jackson, MS Status: For Sale Reference#: 0811J Condition: excellent Year: 1902 Country: Germany Maker: Mettlach Height: 16.25 in. (41.27 cm) Depth: 2 in. (5.08 cm) Width: 16.25 in. Lovely majolica charger with grape leaves and vine on a textured gold background. Marked on the back with the number 324 and a clover leaf mark, both incised under the glaze. More »
Lovely majolica charger with grape leaves and vine on a textured gold background. Marked on the back with the number 324 and a clover leaf mark, both incised under the glaze. This type of marking was typical of the German majolica makers, and this one is Baden. There is VERY slight wear on the tips of the leaves, not visible until you feel it with your fingers. The colors of the leaves are gorgeous, with the luminous gold shading through the rich green that is shaded from olive to emerald, there are also beautiful touches of turquoise visible, and the edges are shades to a rich brown. There are two pierced holes in the back base rim for hanging. As I have not found a reference for the makers mark, I have estimated (based on style) this piece to be from the 1940s, but it may be much older.Dimensions: 1.25 inches high x 11 inches diameter, weight: 1.5 lbs. Status: For Sale Reference#: 2029 Condition: very good Year: 1900 Country: Germany Maker: Baden Height: 11 in. (27.94 cm) Depth: 1.5 in.
