Fabulous Louis XV decoration on this assembled set of 6 table forks, 6 table spoons and six table knives. L'esprit rocaille is abundantly celebrated in this lush and richly conceived design. The spoons and forks are the identical pattern, made by different smiths. This is fairly common, to have more than one silversmith working on an order. The spoons and forks have the same monogram, so they were part of an original set. The knives are made by yet another smith; although in this case there are no monograms and I felt the patterns complimented each other so well, it made sense to offer them together. The three different grand silversmiths are all in the celestial ranks of most favored makers: the spoons made by Jean Grandvigne, the forks by Gaston Bardies and the knives by Ravinet d'Enfert. When one considers how many thousands of French silver smiths there have been over the past two centuries, then one can far better appreciate just how competitive the market is. And how much of a triumph it is indeed to make the top tier in the field, as all three of these smiths have. Indeed, both Grandvigne and Bardies were Tetard successors. So, this is a charming little set, all assembled in a nice box with room for six teaspoons. A great set to start with, or to use for more intimate settings. « Less

I love old silver! Especially when it's from the 18th Century. So hard to find silver earlier than 1800, and these salts are nicely preserved. They have gadrooned edges and three hoofed feet. The marks are rubbed; but the date mark, the city mark and the lion passant are quite discernable. On the bottoms there is an inscription: A present from Mrs. Fraser. Dimensions: 3" wide by 1 1/2" tall. Condition: very good! Some heavy tarnish inside and a couple of very minor dings on the bottom. There is wear from rubbing on the edges and the marks. « Less

Great a la Russe pattern by Henri Gabert, active Paris 1882. There are eleven spoons, one missing alas, in the original fitted box. The pattern is especially nice; quite intricate with a decided Renaissance flavor. The spoons have gilt bowls, both sides. The handle stems boast a criss cross design with floral decorations inside each center. The tips are decorated with stiff leafs, acanthus and a fer de lance type confection with a fine textured ground. Truly a well wrought highly decorative set! Condition is good. There is some gilt loss to one of the spoons. The box, swathed in a luxurious red silk satin interior, has warped a bit through the years. But it is quite functional. Also listing a set of ice cream servers, a la Russe, by Gabert this week. Different pattern; but perhaps close enough that you might not want to miss them.
Dimensions: The spoons are 5.5" long, 1" at the widest and the total silver weight is 155 grams. Marks: maker's punch for Henri Gabert and .800 silver guarantee. « Less

Inspired by the vase de Medicis, and brought to fruition by revered master smith D. Garreau (Paris 1817-1823), a SUPERB covered sterling silver confiturier or sugar. The body is decorated with large palmettos between sumptuous borders. The upper border has a gadrooned ledge atop a pierced silver section; the lower a stiff leaf ledge atop another pierced silver section 'neath which a charming series of thick silver wire loops. The handles festooned with acanthus leafs, pearls and perched kissing birds! The stem flares to a circular bottom edged with a stiff leaf border, resting upon a heavy square base with four spherical feet. The sleek cover, with finely gadrooned edge, boasts a fine berry finial surrounded by charming leafs on stems. The cobalt glass liner adds a color backdrop to further emphasize the exquisite silver work. Withal, a fine and rare confection nearing 200 years of fine aging.
Condition is very good. There is a small chip on the edge of the cobalt liner. Also, there are a few small hairline depressions on the cover. This is doubtless due to careless efforts to remove the cover, which fits so perfectly, that the result of a hasty lift is a bump against a handle. Dimensions: the overall height is 10" tall. The body is 8.75" tall, 7 3/8" wide and 4.75" diameter at the widest. The base is 5" from foot to foot diagonally. Weight is 375 grams. The cobalt liner is 4.75" long, 4.25" diameter a the widest. The lid is 2.75" tall, 4.5" diameter and weighs 120 grams. That is combined .950 silver weight of 495 grams! Marks: all silver parts marked with the Vieillard 1st titre (the French .950 sterling guarantee used between 1819-1838), the maker's punch for D. Garreau. In addition we find the Paris city mark and the silversmith's association mark. « Less
