Sculpture in serpentine marble representing a crouching man. Signed on the back by Richard Mteki who was born in 1947 in Zimbabwe, where he joined during his youth the workshop School of the National Gallery. Mteki most common subject is the human form: " in many of his sculpted heads it is as if a peaceful hand had passed over the brow, shutting the eyes for sleeping" (C. Winter-Irving, author of "The stone sculpture in Zimbvabwe"). Mteki has been chosen to represent Zimbabwe through governement commissions for the state buildings and as gifts for foreign dignitaries. He's now one of the most prominent and collectables names in Zimbabwean sculpture. His works have been extensively collected in Germany, United Kingdom and the United States. Very good condition. Haunting 1920's bust of Beatrice, Dante's love interest way back when. She was his inspiration in many of his famous writings even though they both went on to marry others. Measures 18" high x 20" wide x 10" deep, This bust is awesome, large and heavy, appears to be composition and gesso and has two labels, most likely Italian. Painted in beautiful old golds and fleur-di-lys. She was previously owned by Charles Gerhardt, famous conductor and record producer. She was purchased at his estate sale in 1999. SOLD This is a 12th/13th century Angkor Wat style sculpture of a four-armed Khmer deity. It is difficult to positively identify the deity without the attributes it would hold in its hands but it is most likely Vishnu. The dating of the statue can be established by the overall style of the sculpture, especially the sampot. The deity is wearing a short vertically pleated sampot with double fish-tail sash, a scallop-edge pockets-fold in relief in his left thigh, the belt is carved with a row of double cartouches and beaded borders, a fan-shaped fold in relief at the front and rear. I have attached a copy of the cover page and part of page 33 of a brochure I purchased at the National Museum in Cambodia in 1997; it includes a drawing of the Angkor Wat Style (c. 1100 – c. 1175 A.D.) sampot with a brief description. The deity’s eyes and lips have incised borders, elongated ears with pierced lobes. His face has defined eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose and pouting lips. It has a tiara in front of a conical-shaped chignon. The sculpture is weathered by long exposure to the elements; however, the details of the sampot, headdress and face are still well defined.
