On this cross the poignant and powerful image of the crucified Christ is set against a dramatic background of dark blue enamel with touches of white. God the Father watches from above, offering His blessings, with prostrate angels on either side and the Holy Spirit (as a dove) in the center. The sun and moon look down from upper ends of the horizontal panel, with Jerusalem seen in the distance and the rolling, barren hills of Golgotha below, at the center of which is the skull of Adam. On the back the inscription reads: "Cross, the keeper of the Universe Cross, the beauty of the Church Cross, the power of kings Cross, the support for the faithful ones Cross, the glory of angels Cross, the beginning of everything." It continues: "I speak as One Who has waited for your adoration. Your sins will be judged by My judgment. I will show you the way. I will show Myself to you in order to forgive you. I will give you My kindness, to those who follow Me and who need Me for the sake of their salvation. For your sake I was falsely accused and persecuted." The beauty of this cross lies in its combination of simplicity and ornateness, with Christ depicted graphically, yet with tenderness and compassion. - (PF.5245)Enameled Brass Cross - PF.5245Origin:Russia Circa:1750ADto1900ADDimensions:10.25" (26.0cm) high x 5.25" (13.3cm) wide Collection: Russian Crosses Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass

On this cross God the Father looks down upon the poignant scene of Christ's Crucifixion. Two angels swoop down, their wings like fire, their bodies stationary yet full of energy. At left Mary Magdalen bows her head in reverence and sorrow, with an attendant standing next to her. At right St. John looks up at Jesus with his hands clasped in prayer, while St. George the 'victor' holds a spear, watching the scene in some bewilderment. Jerusalem, in the style of a medieval Russian town, is seen behind the barren hills of Golgotha. At the bottom is the skull of Adam, the earthly remains of Man juxtaposed to the eternal nature of God above. The detailed floral patterns on the reverse are typical of the 'Lubok' style. This collection of scenes, referring to a single event with different levels of perspective, is set againstabackground of very lovely pale blue. Within the boundaries of this cross are the elements, both physical and metaphysical, which lie at the heart of the Christian religion. - (PF.5248)Enameled Brass Cross-PF.5248Origin:Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 6.5" (16.5cm) high x 4.25" (10.8cm) wide Collection: Russian Crosses Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less

This interesting cross was specially designed for use by a priest to bless his congregation. God watches the scene from above, while two angels prostrate themselves--to God and to Christ. The inscription under the arms of Jesus states, "To Your cross we pray, Your resurrection we praise." At left Mary Magdalen lowers her head in reverence and sorrow, with an attendant standing behind her. At right St.John looks up at Jesus with compassion, while St. George 'the Victor' stands behind him holding a spear. The use of white on dark blue adds perspective, especially on the Golgotha hills with Jerusalem in the background. To hold this cross is to be in touch with countless blessings; and to behold it, is to be in touch with the most profound elements of Christianity. - (PF.5251)Enameled Brass Cross - PF.5251Origin:Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 8.75" (22.2cm) high x 5.75" (14.6cm) wide Collection: Russian Crosses Style: Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less

This style of cross was specially designed for use by Orthodox priests in blessing their congregations. The upper portion shows God the Father giving His blessings, with More »
This style of cross was specially designed for use by Orthodox priests in blessing their congregations. The upper portion shows God the Father giving His blessings, with adoring angels prostrate at His feet; while the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove is at the center. The inscription under the arms of Jesus reads, "To Your cross we pray, Your resurrection we praise." On the left vertical panel is the weeping Mary, Mother of Christ with an attendant. The opposite panel shows St. John and a Roman soldier. Jerusalem is graphically depicted, as are the rolling sepulchral hills of Golgotha. The skull at the bottom represents not only the infamous place of execution, but also the skull of Adam. On the back are elaborate floral designs in the neo- classical style. Perhaps most impressive is the artist's use of dark blue and white enamel, which brings to mind the moment of Christ's death when the clouds darkened and lightening struck. -(PF.5255)Enameled Brass Cross - PF.5255Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to 1900 ADDimensions: 8.75" (22.2cm) high x 5.75" (14.6cm) wide

The form of the Orthodox cross comprises two distinct elements, each one separate but also and integral part of the other. Christ's crucifixion occupies the central position and the main theme. At left Mary Magdalen grieves with her head bowed and an attendant behind her. While on the right St. John looks up imploringly, as does St. George 'the Victor', standing behind John holding a spear. The crucifixion is the 'worldly' aspect of the scene, though there is a sense something supernatural is about to occur. From above God the Father looks down from heaven, offering His blessings, while two angels prostrate themselves to God and Jesus. At the bottom, the cruel ground of Golgotha is graphically depicted, with the skull of Adam in the center. Touches of white contribute to the 'otherworldy' nature of the etting, which is both the light of day and the light of heaven. - (PF.5256)Enameled Brass Cross - PF.5256Origin: Russia Circa: 1750 AD to1900ADDimensions:6.5(16.5cm)highx4.25(10.8cm)wide Collection:Russian Crosses Style:Russian Orthodox Medium: Enameled Brass « Less
