A superbly executed oil on board by well known Dutch artist Louis Apol (1850-1936). He was a pupil of Johannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers (1819–66) and Pieter Stortenbeker (1828–98) and studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. His first exhibited work, in 1869, was a summer landscape, but he made his name with A January Evening in the Hague Woods (c . 1875; Amsterdam, Rijksmus.). He specialized in winter landscapes; his works became extremely popular in the last quarter of the 19th century. This painting comes in what appears to be the original period frame which measures approx. 18" x 15". The frame has some damage as shown but works quite well with the painting. The painting itself is in very good condition and signed lower right. « Less

Another late 19th or very early 20th c. etching by Jack Hewer. Hewer was well known in the late 1800's as an illustrator for many books. He also did etchings, and we are lucky enough to have a couple for sale. This piece is numbered 18 of 75 and is signed lower right. The title, lower left, is a bit tough to read but looks like "T' path ta ? Wilkens". Use your judgment as to what it says. The scene depicts a hunter returning home with his dog behind him. There is a rock wall and more houses in the distance. A somber scene but well executed. Good condition. Measures 10"x 6" and with the frame it is 18"x 12 1/2". A bit of wording on the back likely by the framer. « Less
