44602 Antique Agra, India, late nineteenth century - In the grand, classic Mughal tradition, a lush design of swaying vines, leaves, and palmettes undulates gracefully across the rich red field of this superb antique Agra. The curling ‘sickle’ leaves are the hallmark of the ‘Herati’ pattern in its classic Indo-Persian form, as are the lovely, sinuous cloudbands derived from Chinese court carpets and textiles. A distinctive repeating pattern of palmettes flanked by sickle leaves comprises the main border, set against a gold ground in pleasing contrast to the field. Antique Sultanabad, Persia, late nineteenth centuryWhile antique Sultanabads are known for their bold, large scale rendering of classical Persian carpet designs, this one is extraordinary in its use of a delicate Mina Khani pattern in the field with a bold border pattern. The field design has an array of rosette-like palmettes linked by a trellis of arabesque vines. The strapwork border is much more monumental than the field. It derives from the classical Persian carpets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and here it offers a stunning contrast to the finesse of the Mina Khani. This exceptional Ravar has a grand, finialled cruciform medallion design surrounded by heart-shaped cornerpieces. The areas within these elements and the intervening field are all filled with a fine welter of delicate vines and flowers, and with a uniform coloration of tans, blues and cinnamon throughout. The various vinescroll borders are similarly rendered. As a result, the enormous complexity of the design tends to recede into the background, along with form of the main medallion and cornerpieces, thereby giving the carpet a far more decorative and modern appeal despite the classical detail.
