This wonderful piece of Saint Nicholas of Myra features beautiful gold leaf work and very fine hairline brushstrokes. This piece is in pristine condition. Here Saint Nicholas is depicted as an Orthodox bishop, wearing the omophorion and holding a Gospel Book, sometimes he is depicted wearing the Eastern Orthodox mitre, sometimes he is bareheaded. Iconographically, Nicholas is depicted as an elderly man with a short, full white beard and balding head. In commemoration of the miracle attributed to him by tradition at the Ecumenical Council of Nicea, he is sometimes depicted with Christ over his left shoulder holding out a Gospel Book to him and the Theotokos over his right shoulder holding the omophorion. This is a beautiful 19th Century Icon of Our Lady of Kazan. In "Our Lady of Kazan" icon the right hand of the Virgin is pointing to Christ as the true path for Rescue of fallen humanity. The hands of Mary are not depicted and kept hidden from the viewer. Only a small inclination of the head of the Virgin to Christ in a unique "gesture" on the icon. It symbolizes the unity and love of Mother and Divine Child, which Byzantine theologians interpreted as unity in the love of Christ and the Church of Our Lady. This is a beautiful Russian Icon from the 19th Century. This piece has very fine hairline brushstrokes. It features the Resurrection of Christ which is recognized on during celebration of Pascha (called "Easter Sunday" in the West) in the Orthodox Church. In iconography, Our Lord is depicted pulling up Adam and Eve out of their sepulchers while trampling upon the gates of Hades (death). In the background stand the Old Testament patriarchs, prophets, and other figures, including John the Forerunner, who announced Jesus' advent.
