Two prancing horses are the subject of this old tile panel. Each tile measures 5.5 inches square, and is hand painted on a crackled white ground. Probably Spanish or Portugese in origin. This is a wonderful antique tile with a highly modelled face of a fawn. Executed in an unglazed red brick faience clay, fingermarks are still evident on the sides showing the handmade nature. The face has a nice dark patina. The back is unmarked, but attributed to Enfield Pottery of Pennsylvania from the clay body and style. The condition is very good. It has a couple of chips and shrinkage lines in the clay. It''s a hefty and solid piece! Three antique transfer tiles are encased in an original iron (or steel?) frame with wooden bun feet to make this extra special trivet. The colorful tiles depict stylized seedpods and flowers between interlocking borders. They were made by Webbs Tileries, which was only in operation between 1870 and 1900. This piece''s use was probably more decorative than utilitarian and remains in excellent condition with very little wear to the face of the tiles.
