Obsidian is a light, shiny black stone created when a volcanic flow is cooled very quickly, into what geologists call, "volcanic glass". Pure black obsidian is called "Apache Tears" and when it features a colored sheen, such as these beads, it is called "Rainbow Obsidian". Obsidian has long been fashioned into knives and arrowheads, but Obsidian also polishes to a shiny mirror surface. This mirror surface has been attributed to many spiritual uses by ancient civilizations. Used by the Aztecs in creating images of the God Tezcatlipoca, (which means "shining mirror"). To them the stone was sacred, called "iztli" or "teotetl" meaning "divine stone." Because of its mirror-like polish, this stone is often associated with divining the future in its clear, glassy surface. All Obsidian is considered extremely protective. Obsidian is most commonly thought to be a gemstone that reflects back to us (mirrors) our own flaws, in no uncertain terms, for Obsidian energy is not thought to be subtle energy. It is said to induce visions and dreams that reveal to us our own part in the difficult areas of our lives.Collection: Jewelry Style: Beaded Necklaces Medium: Obsidian « Less

In Matthew, the kingdom of heaven is compared to a single rare and costly pearl for which a man would sell all he has. The delicate, lustrous beauty of the pearl has captured the imagination of men and women since the dawn of time. Early cultures worshiped it as a symbol of the moon goddess, a token of perfection. This exquisite gem is formed when an irritant becomes trapped inside the shell of a mollusk, most often an oyster. To protect itself, the animal forms a coating of nacre around the intrusive object, and this eventually may become a pearl. The gem ranges in color from pale white, to rosy pink, to gray or black. In the classical world, the finest pearls came from the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, sometimes traveling for years to reach the palaces of Greece and Rome. Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt, is said to have dissolved an enormous pearl in wine, which she then drank to impress her lover Marc Antony with her extravagance. In the courts of Renaissance Europe, status was often measured through the size and beauty of one's pearls. Over thousands of years, pearls are one of the few jewelry items to remain continuously in fashion. It is easy to see why. They delight the eye and flatter the wearer, a true gift from nature. The name of this exquisite purple quartz crystal comes from the Greek word meaning “not drunk†as the stone was believed in Antiquity to keep the wearer sober no More »
The name of this exquisite purple quartz crystal comes from the Greek word meaning “not drunk†as the stone was believed in Antiquity to keep the wearer sober no matter how much wine he might consume. All the great ancient civilizations valued the gem, which was particularly popular in Egypt for scarabs and in Greece and Rome for intaglio rings. Because of its wine-dark color and its use to prevent intoxication, many were carved with the head of the wine-god Dionysus. The oldest known stone in the Crown Jewels of England is an amethyst first worn in the 11th century by Edward the Confessor. Even today, the rings of high-ranking ecclesiastics often have amethysts as their center stones. Many wonderful and therapeutic properties are ascribed to the gem: it can cure gout, it cleanses the body of impurities, it keeps the mind clear and alert and improves the memory, it gives the wearer pleasant dreams and keeps him immune from infection and contagious diseases. Because it is a crystal the energy level radiating from this translucent royal gem is particularly high, causing the wearer to feel wonderful both inside and out. Medium: Amethyst « Less
