Antique Serab, Persia, late nineteenth century. A series of diamond medallions and V-shaped palmettes repeats along the soft camel ground of this crisply abstract Serab runner. In the classic Serab manner, the design is an astute blend of complexity and open simplicity. An ivory ground vinescroll border encloses the field, surrounded yet again by a reciprocal trefoil border in red and blue. An outer band with stylized plants and animals on camel adroitly reaffirms the palette and openness of the field.

Antique Oushak, Turkey, circa 1900 This antique Oushak is a symphony of luscious cream and tan tones accented with sparing linear detail in red. One might easily think that this detail largely comprises the pattern, but a closer look reveals the intervening design in tan on cream. The red details are only the core elements of larger palmette designs that tease the viewer like the smile of the Cheshire Cat. Antique Ghiordes Carpet, nineteenth century - Although the weave and coloration identify this sumptuous carpet as an antique Ghiordes from Western Turkey, its design is rare and extraordinary among rugs of this type. A richly articulated central medallion is enclosed by four monumental cornerpieces, which come together so as the make the intervening cinnamon ground look like another large medallion. The delicate vinescroll border balances the monumentality of the field rather effectively, but the ultimate effect depends mostly on the exquisitely soft and cool blend of pale green, cinnamon, and tans.
