Description: You are viewing an absoloutely fantastic set of 8 English Regency style dining chairs hand crafted from walnut with intricate marquetry work to the back splat. The set consists of two arm chairs and six side chairs. This set really is the ultimate in dining chairs and I hope the photos adequately convey their quality and crafting. The walnut has been repolished which has really bought the grain and whorls to the wood out a treat. The backsplat features hand carved shell motifs to the top and bottom. They also feature intricate marquetry work on the form of urns, scrolls, classical vines and leafs. If you consider that each of the shapes to the inlay work has to be hand cut from the softer fruitwoods and then embedded into the main structure of the walnut. Amazing. The legs have been hand fluted giving them that classial aesthetic typical of the Regency look. The arms on the carvers also curve around. The chairs are very solid and comfortable to sit on. They are very sturd with no wobbly movement. They also come with the red upholstered fabric which is new and free from any previous owners smells such as pets and smoke which is good news. The set is offered in perfect condition ready for home use right away. In the background of the photos you can see we have a perfect matching marquetry table which is also available for sale and would make for a great set. Of course if you were to buy the table AND chairs we would make a great discount. It would be the ultimate dining set and would last you for many generations, hence making these a great investment and heirloom. Please email for more details or check our eBay store. Description: Viewings possible in our Hertfordshire warehouse - or if you are further afield I hope the photos suffice! For the ultimate in dining chairs look no further. I'd like to say they are the king of chairs but that would be incorrect as these are Queen Anne style chairs with the distinctive, solid, wonderful craftmanship as befits this model. Hence, they are the Queen of chairs. You are viewing a set of 10 - consisting of two arm chairs and eight sides. We have also shown them around an English Georgian pedestal dining table we currently have available, so please contact us if you are looking for a complete dining set. These chairs are unique as they have the markings under the seats incised by the maker so they can identify the top to the bottom. This is the mark of a quality set of chairs. They have a wonderful fluidity and rhythm to these chairs with the cabriole legs with hand carved motifs and the beautiful back spalt with the scrolling emblem. To sit in they are also very comfortable with the re-upholstered white seats to each chair, hence free from any previous owners smells such as smoke and pets, always a bonus. They look fantastic round a dining table (please check our Ebay shop or email for further details as we have matching tables currently for sale right now. Of course by chairs and table and we give a super discount). I have pictured them here around a matching pedestal table we have available for sale. I think you will agree at how great they look. We can also sell them as a set of 6 or 8 if you don't need 10. This set have come back from the restorers where they had a repolish so they are ready for home use right away - solid, sturdy, these chairs are built to last and will serve you well. The veneer to the burr walnut is beautiful and still has the pungent aroma of fresh polish. The Queen Anne Style is name applied to three separate styles: an early 18th-century style of decorative arts and architecture, an architectural style of the late 19th century in England, and a similar architectural style of the late 19th century in America. The first refers to design during the reign of Queen Anne, which began in 1702 and lasted until 1714. The style extended partly into the reign of her successor, George I. Hallmarks of Queen Anne furniture design are chairs with cabriole legs and backs curved to fit the spine, and a variety of small tables suited to serving tea. Silverware, graceful in line, is unadorned. In architecture, 18th-century Queen Anne style is associated with small residential buildings, typically of brick—as opposed to contemporary English Baroque buildings. Queen Anne style was revived in England about 1870 in the series of red brick London town houses and Elizabethan-style manor houses built by the English architect and urban designer Richard Norman Shaw. Influenced by Shaw's work, American designers adapted the style to American tastes. Chippendale, Thomas (1718-1779), English furniture designer and cabinetmaker whose name has become the generic label for furniture of the 1750s and 1760s. The son of a Yorkshire joiner, he probably served a family apprenticeship before seeking his fortune in London. He established a workshop there around 1749, later moving to spacious premises in St Martin's Lane, at the hub of the London furniture trade. His partner, James Rannie, probably financed the business. In 1754 Chippendale published The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director by subscription. This was a book of engraved designs for a wide variety of household furniture in the fashionable styles of the time, including the Rococo, Chinese, and Gothic tastes. It was reissued in 1755 and, with additions in the newly emerging Neo-Classical style, between 1759 and 1762. The Director established Chippendale's reputation as a leading cabinetmaker and ensured his lasting influence. It was the most distinguished of all the 18th-century furniture design books and the first to provide a comprehensive survey of the styles in vogue. Chippendale's considerable business (he employed about 50 skilled craftsmen) was not without setbacks: in 1755 the cabinet shop was severely damaged by fire, and the death of Rannie in 1766 led to financial problems. Although relatively little is known of Chippendale's private life and although he never achieved the gentlemanly status of some of his contemporary cabinetmakers, his firm produced a quantity of fine furniture for noble and wealthy patrons, and this is well documented. For some he both designed and provided complete interior schemes and it is known that he furnished interiors designed by Robert Adam. In addition, the firm supplied general household furnishings and equipment such as beds and bedding, mirrors, servants' furniture, wallpapers, floor coverings, curtains and upholstery, chimney pieces and stoves, decorative metalwork and silverware; its services included repairs and removals, the hiring out of furniture, and funerals. Some of Chippendale's most important furniture, ranging from early Director pieces to those executed in the Neo-Classical style of the late 1760s and 1770s, can still be seen in the houses for which it was commissioned. Notable examples are Dumfries House, Ayrshire; Wilton House, Wiltshire; Aske Hall, Nostell Priory, Harewood House, Newby Hall and Burton Constable in Yorkshire; Mersham le Hatch, Kent; Paxton House, Berwickshire; and Petworth House, Sussex. Chippendale's eldest son, also Thomas (1749-1822), continued the business and maintained its reputation as one of the leading cabinetmakers of the late 18th century.
