In an overview of Ancient Greek pottery, perhaps no single style is as charming as the works originating from the Italian province of Apulia. The Greek colonies of southern Italy (known in antiquity as Magna Grecia) were marked by their initial allegiance to the ceramic styles of the Attic mainland. However, over the years, native traditions and innovations heavily influenced the works of Magna Grecian potters. Unorthodox forms and painting-styles were seamlessly merged with the standard Greek style, creating distinctive works of art unique to the Hellenistic world. This beautiful, shallow, ring-base dish reveals the extraordinary artistic sensibilities of the western Greeks, reflecting their successful assimilation of the traditional Greek artistic styles with the local, non-Greek artistic tastes and techniques. The portrait of a woman as a form of ceramic decoration was quite popular in this region of Italy during the 4th century B.C., and this painted dish is a fine example of such works. Here, we see a lovely rendition of a woman’s head, the high quality of drawing readily appreciated as we observe the rendering of her subtle facial features and adornments. In her hair, she wears a saccos, the characteristic cloth head cover worn during this era, and a stephane, or wreath. An earring adorns her ear while a dotted necklace graces her neck. A reserve band of red handsomely frames the overall scene, and the rim of the dish is further adorned with a band of waves. - (CK.0012)

Attributed to the Atella Painter, this large and very fine Hydria shows on its obverse a nude young man with arms and legs spread wide moving towards a young woman who holds a phaile. Behind the man is a small attendant figure or possibly a child, while a satyr and female float above. The figures stand upong a thick ground line done in a meander pattern alternating with a floral motif. On the reverse are a profusion of palmettes and split palmettes giving the impression the intriguing action of the figures is taking place outdoors, adding to the overall mystery of the scene. - (PF.5348) « Less

A very high-ridged spout with the small handle at a right angle is a distinctive feature of the guttus. The vessel's narrow and bulbous body sits on a pedestal base which has a band of orange clay exposed. On the top is a nicely modeled head of a man with wavy hair and curly beard resembling classical depictions of Zeus, or perhaps Hercules. Some scholars believe the guttus was used as a type of baby bottle; but more likely it was used as a filling bottle for oil lamps. Its shape is certainly distinctive and very appealing. - (PF.5402) « Less

One of a pair, this graceful vessel was used to pour offerings of wine or milk onto the tomb of some ancient person--almost certainly a woman--who lived during the flower of the Classical age. The head itself may represent a goddess, perhaps a protector of women, or an idealized feminine beauty that still delights the senses. We are reminded of those long ago lives- -full of laughter, color, tears and dreams--which perhaps were not so very different from our own. - (PF.0339) « Less
