This pyxis is a beautiful example of the "sickle" type, so named because the shape of the vessel resembles that of a sickle. Linear incisions ornament the vessel's body. This type was most probably used to hold prefumes or smaller precious objects. This type most likely originated in Macedonia, although two such pyxides were found at Samos. Cf: For a related example, see no. 120 in Vokotopoulou, ed, Macedonians, The Northern Greeks. « Less
