During the Age of Opulence that followed the Civil War, Gorham Manufacturing Company often produced silver that exemplified the over-the-top taste of the day, a mad clash of historical styles that could often fit together somehow. Here, however, is a lovely sterling silver compote in pure classical design, and with a date-mark of 1873. Aside from the upwardly sweeping elegance of the reverse trumpet base and the generous flat bowl, the only design elements are simple fillets, the uppermost bound one with simple ribbon. All the plain surfaces are subtly matted, the interior lightly gilded. Approximately eight inches in diameter and five inches tall. « Less

The condition is very fine, with no damage and wear that is consistent with its age. Diameter is approximately 10 inches. « Less

Recently retired from the art scene is famous naif painter Rodolphe Rousseau, the nom de brosse of a lovely and well-born Frenchwoman who has delighted us for years with her scenes of France of the Belle Epoche. It is almost as if she has said, "Reality, don't enter here!" This is one of her best, the gathering of a group of bikers at the cycle shop before a race. It is world we would gladly enter into -- and probably win, if we are Americans. Oil on artist's board, with a preliminary sketch on the back left exposed to show a different approach she abandoned for the final format. Approximately 15 inches by 23-1/2 inches. « Less

Very South-of-the-Border are these two tripod cups which combine design elements of the Old World with Aztec traditions. Shaped rather like braziers, the bodies are topped with a collar of paneled flutes, the feet are like upside-down lion's-paws and an acorn finial drops from below. Marks are the old Mexican spread-wing eagle tax stamp, the maker's mark (?), a purity indication of 900 and "Mexico." Early Twentieth Century. Excellent condition and heavy weight. Approximately four inches in diameter and 2-1/2 inches high. « Less
