A real woodcarving tour de force is this Art Nouveau fantasy vase, depicting a snail shell held up by ferns, the sort of thing found in majolica and silver quite often in the latter Nineteenth Century. Were it carved of a plain piece of wood it would still be a triumph, but it was formed from an elaborately pieced together parquetry of several different and contrasting woods: boxwood, ebony, etc. British or Continental, with a few chips out here and there. Approximately six inches high and three inches in diameter. « Less
