Each side is further adorned with a central floral nosegay in rose, green and yellow opaque glazes. They only discernible flaw to the piece is some chipping to one of the roses. English, circa 1850. One side displays a full compass rose flanked by sailing vessels, the other side is emblazoned with a sentimental poem about a seafaring man. The floral borders of the poem and other details are highlighted with colored glazes, while the background in rare orange luster. Sunderland, Durham, England, circa 1830-1840. Approximately 5-1/4 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide at the handle. Excellent condition with little wear, although there is a shallow chip on the bottom edge. (See photograph 3.) « Less

A charming bit of rustic handicraft is this small snuff-box made of carefully built-up thin layers of serrated birch bark held in place by many tiny brass nails. Small cut-out circles reveal a surprise of blue underneath, and a trace of shiny brown at the base suggests that it was probably originally bound like that all around the top and bottom in that manner. The original leather thong still forms the handle for the top. Early to mid-Nineteenth Century, probably Tyrolean or Alpine. Fine, unrestored condition. Approximately 3-3/4 inches long by 1-1/2 inches to top of box by 1-1/4 inches deep. « Less
