Beautiful antique Japanese fan. Made 19th century and full of signatures from old Salem Oregon families, some dated to the 1880''s. Measures 12 1/4 inches in length. Fan with beautiful decoration of cranes flying through cherry blossoms. Very interesting treatment to the scene, which is divided into vignettes that manage to seperate and connect with each other. Exceptional range of colours - from bright pink to subtle greens and golds, with lots of fine black outline. The reverse side has a simple spray of foliage, beautifully and tastefully done with the subtlety and elegance associated with Japanese art. The sticks are wooden with scrolls painted on the guards. Connected by buttons made of mother of pearl and what might be copper. The fan was signed in the 1880''s by a number of people, all from Salem, Oregon. We were told that some of the names are of well-known Salem families. The date is clearly written in some cases. Condition is generally very good with some wear on the creases, especially near the top of the fan, as shown magnified in the ''photos. Antique carved snuff bottle. Made in China, 19th century. 3 1/4 inches high. All made of the same material. The entire surface is wonderfully carved with tiny people, all in movement, seem to be waving flags, amongst a natural scene with Classic Chinese rock formations and trees - all with lovely detail. The neck has a Greek Key pattern, tightly and elaborately carved and the neck and lid are in the form of lotus flowers. Lid with original spoon. Great patina formed over the years. Good condition. Earthenware, green glazed water pot. Made in China, 18th century. Measures 7 3/4 inches tall and approx 5 3/4 inches accross. Hexagonal form with deep crevaces at the join of each facet. Gabled / stirrup ridge on top forms handle. Short spout. Small, round opening on lid with fitted, shaped stopper. Most of the surface is glazed in an emerald green colour - highly attractive. The bottom rim, about 1/4 inch (1cm approx) was left unglazed altogether and the border adjacent to this is a very deep, almost black shade. Very good condition. Antique Chinese snuff bottle made of blue glass and internatlly painted on both sides. Jade stopper. Chien-lung. Ovoid shaped bottle made of blue glass. Wonderful painting both front and back inside the glass. One side depicts a man walking in a landscape. Over one shoulder he carries a lantern. In the other hand he holds a large hat on a stick. He walks under bent, gnarled trees. Mountains and fields in the distance. Colours are mainly blue, black, white and a little orange on his back. The other side is a classic Chinese river / landscape. Delicately painted trees on one side, a river with rocks protruding, behind which are wonderful cloud-covered mountains. A tiny building nestles under the trees and if you look very closely, you will see a tiny man fishing from a pavilion. Again, tones of blue, black, white and orange. Antique Chinese amber carved urn shaped snuff bottle with spinach green jade stopper. Measures approx 2 1/2 inches high (6cm). Wonderful old orange mottled with brown amber. Great transluscence - you can look through layers to the inside. Carved feaux handles on either side. Spinach green jade stopper. THe delicate spoon has broken, but the pieces are inside. Good condition with a tiny nick near one shoulder (less than a mm long and only mentioined for accuracy of description). This bottle was part of a collection that was sold via one of the Sothebys branches. Antique Chinese Shun-chi carved, mottled agate snuff bottle with a rose quartz stopper. Measures approx 2 3/4inches high (7cm). Flask shaped bottle made of beautifully mottled agate hard stone. The sides have raised panels with carved patterns / which might be hieroglyphics (if someone can read them, please let us know), or purely decorative. Rose quartz stopper with ivory spoon.
