Signed and dated 1881, oil on canvas, Victorian painting in a fine original frame. This lovely land and river scape depicts a stately home on the banks of a river, surrounded by lush growth and large trees. On the river is a row boat with a gentleman rowing and two female passengers. On the shore is a bench with an adult and a child. This is a very lovely, peaceful painting, done by a skilled hand. Although it is fully signed, I cannot make out the signature. The original frame is quite elaborate and retains it's original gilding in good condition. The painting has several old repairs which are only noticeable on the figure of the man rowing the boat which we have pictured. There is also some minor paint loss that is not very notable and overall the painting displays very well. 32" wide x 19 1/2" high over all, painting is 24" x 12".   « Less

Anthony Thieme painting titled Morning Light Gloucester c1920. The gold leaf frame measures 39 and one half inches by 35 inches and the painting measures 25 by 30 inches. The back stretcher has the title written on the top. The painting is signed lower left. Anthony Thieme was a Dutch born American painter. Born 1888 died 1954. Thieme, from Rotterdam, Holland, became one of Rockport, Massachusetts’ best known and most prolific painters. As a youth he attended a naval school and developed a love of boats. He studied art throughout Europe, including at the academy in The Hague. His travels took him as far as Brazil and Argentina. In 1929 he discovered Rockport and moved there. he won numerous awards at the Salmagundi Club, the North Shore Arts Association, and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club. In addition, his works were constantly exhibited nationwide, and the following museums own his works: the Montclair Art Museum, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Dayton Art Institute, and others. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston has one of his many images of Motif No. 1.   « Less

Period antique China trade oil on canvas of the merchant ship Southern Cross of Liverpool, circa 1857, H. Manly, Commander. This particular type of sailing ship is called a barque. It is shown sailing into Hong Kong port with Hawks Peak in the background. The barque has gun ports painted on its sides, although it does not have any cannon. These ships were so painted to deceive marauding pirates. If pirates believed a ship was manned with cannon, they were were much less likely to attack it. This painting has been cleaned and mounted in a period appropriate museum copy frame and museum stretcher.   « Less
