Wow a very unusual mechanical pencil with very early racing cars on it. The main scene shows a racing car going through the countryside with a barn and trees in the background. The other side shows two smaller cars racing through a rutted road with fence posts. Extremely rare and unusual piece. The outer skin is done in 10K gold and has laurel leaves going down the sides so this may even be a prize for a real racing event. Pretty cool either way. Measures 5.75'' long fully extended. Extension mechanism works but a little hard, very minor wear overall very good condition. Circa 1905. Antique, Victorian matched 3-colour gold fob / seal with carved gem. Made early 19th century. Measurements: total length is almost 1 1/4 inches (31mm). Weighs 9.7grams. The gemstone is approx 14mm ( a little over 1/2 inch) long. Rectangular base with rounded corners. The somewhat domed top of the base has a lyre standing in it''s middle. The lyre is wrapped within a snake, whose head rests on the domed base of the fob and part of whose body forms a loop for hanging from a chain. The gold is beautifully decorated with engraving in rose colours and raised borders in a V-pattern. Close magnification shows the fabulous detail in the texturing of the lyre and the patterns on the snake''s body. The seal under the fob is most likely a citrine with a carved monogram DM in script. The stone is faceted and foiled for wonderful reflection of light. With the VIctorian penchant for puns and jokes, could the snake/lyre (liar?) be a hidden message? The question can only add to our enjoyment of the charming piece. Very good condition. Antique Art Nouveau era inkwell and tray made of different forms of bronze metal and sculpted with a dragonfly and a goldfish in a swirling pond amidst waterlilies and water foliage. Made late 19th century and is either Japanese or French done in the Japanese style. Generally round form approx 7 inches accross and a little over 3 1/2 inches high. The inkwell sits inside a hinged water lily, it''s stem and buds arching and twining around a a swirling eddy, bordered by foliage and waterplant life. Amidst the bowl / tray, as though popping out of the water, is a beautifully detailed deep copper coloured goldfish and buzzing above it, a small dragonfly. It would be typical of Japanese superior workmanship and quality to have a semi-hidden insect. Condition is generally very good except for a chip in the glass insert of the inkwell.
