Seljuk Bronze Oil Lamp - AMD.230, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1100 AD to 1300 AD, Dimensions:9.2" (23.4cm) high x 5.1" (13.0cm) wide, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Seljuk, Medium: Bronze, In the 9th century, hordes of nomadic Turkic horseman living on the outskirts of the Muslim world began to migrate westward into the heart of Central Asia. By the 10 century, a branch known as the House of Seljuk had broken off from the Oghuz confederation of Turkomen tribesmen, arrived into mainland Persia, and settled in the province of Khurasan. Overtime, the Seljuks converted to Islam and began to adopt the Persian language and culture. In the 11th century, the Seljuks set up an independent state under their leader Tugrul Bey with its capital in Isfahan, initially under the auspices of the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad. The arts thrived during the Seljuk period as the Turkic rulers patronized Persian culture, arts, and literature.

Circa 1880. Exceptional Victorian oil lamp. This beautiful lamp features elaborate decorations throughout with scenes of cherubs (Putti) on both sides of the oil reservoir and bold curved handles with women's faces on each side, all sitting on a graduated pedestal base with elaborate detail. This large important lamp retains it's original patina with all the raised detail a brighter copper then the rest. Probably English in origin, it is marked "made in the UK" on the knob that adjusts the height of the wick. The extremely fine Period, cranberry and white swirled glass shade is not original to this lamp but works very well. We would be happy to consider selling the light without the shade if that is preferred. Very good condition with a deep original age patina to the metal and no damage to the glass. 27 " tall x 10" wide. « Less

A token of a faith already old when this lamp was created, such an object might have lit Jewish homes or temples centuries ago. A metaphor for joy and prosperity, for hope, for life itself, lamps have illumninated the path of civilization for centuries. They have guided great thoughts through the night, stood vigil with lonely passions. In the presence of this simple object, we are in touch directly with a vanished world, with the people once warmed by its glow. Today it remains as an enduring symbol of man's desire to conquer the darkness. - (L.1684) « Less
